Moving to P1 Transition Initiative Launch Event for Parents/Carers Wednesday 26th October 2016 6.00pm

Early Years Collaborative The ambition of the Early Years Collaborative is to make Scotland the best place in the world to grow up in by improving outcomes, and reducing inequalities, for all babies, children, mothers, fathers and families across Scotland to ensure that all children have the best start in life and are ready to succeed. Several studies have already been carried out – GUS (Growing up in Scotland) study. Initial findings show that parental involvement in children’s play and activities has a long term positive impact on their learning.

Early Years Collaborative The EYC has identified a suite of high impact interventions. These are the things that we have a high degree of belief that, if done reliably, every time, for every child, will have the potential to make the biggest impact on outcomes and achievement of the EYC aims. In our journey to identify these specific high impact interventions, we have identified the following Key Change themes. Early support for pregnancy and beyond Attachment, child development and learning Continuity of care in transitions 27-30 month child health review Parenting skills and family engagement to support learning Addressing child poverty Health and Wellbeing Play

Kirkliston Nursery – Moving into P1 This scheme was piloted last year in the Queensferry cluster. Last year the target was 85% participation – we ranged from 36%- 81% across the range of tasks. The activities are flexible and each nursery came up with their own ideas – we would welcome any suggestions from you. We have adapted several tasks and the timing this year to reflect feedback. These tasks are designed to help you prepare your child for moving in to Primary 1 in a variety of ways, including a taste of homework tasks for the first time!

Transition Tasks Information Tasks will be spread out between now and the Easter holidays We will plan activities and events in nursery and homework tasks. We ask for them to be completed or returned within a specific time to fit in with the focus in Nursery if possible. Our parent and child workshops in November will be based on the first 2 tasks relating to play and numbers.

Progress through play Poster in entrance and emailed home Task shared and discussed in nursery at group time and sent home with covering note Our Morning Parent and child workshops will have a play theme to support this task Make a model made from junk/ lego/ playdough etc. at home. Share a photo or parent postcard about it or bring your model to Nursery!

Notice Numbers! Poster will be displayed and e mailed to Parents Task will be sent home after discussion at group times We will be noticing numbers in Nursery this week too and finding opportunities to explore numbers in everyday tasks and places. Our afternoon Parent and child workshops in November will have a numeracy theme to support this task. We will create a display in the corridor to share examples of your child noticing numbers at nursery and at home.

Borrow a Bedtime Story Initiative Current system is a lending library Plan to launch this during Book Week Scotland (21st – 27th Nov) Each group will have a coloured box with books to choose from at pick up time Based on trust – please take and return books daily Read and talk about the books together
