Public Conference December 16 2010 High Speed Railway Assessment Rail Specific Planning and Development Analysis Public Conference December 16 2010

Rail Specific Planning and Development Analysis, Phase 2 Subject 1 – Further review of single track high speed railway lines Acceptance criteria of punctuality Design of crossing loops Subject 2 – Track connections on high speed railway lines Design of passing loops Design of track loops Subject 3 – Station on High speed railway lines Station design Effects of high speed rail stop Benefits of station establishment Experiences from other countries

Acceptance Criteria for Punctuality Interim Report are delivered Punctuality is an important factor in railway operations. It is a central measure of performance and it is widely used to evaluate effectiveness of infrastructure investments and timetable adjustments. Conclusion and proposal in the interim report: “High speed lines shall be constructed for punctuality on five minute level within the interval 85-95 %. Assuming negative exponential distributed delays these values corresponds to mean delays of 1-3 minutes.”

Design of Crossing loops Single track Length of crossing loops? Train A Train B Crossing loops Length between crossing loops?

Design of Passing and Track loops Double track Length between passing loops? Length of passing loops? Freight Train High speed Train Passing loops High speed Train Track loops Length between track loops? Track loops – Flexibility and Maintenance Alternative design for passing loops

Station Design How to design stations on single and double track high speed railways? Important issues are for example flexibility for the train traffic and safety arrangement for passengers. Example design for station with only IC- stop and high speed train passes IC - Train High speed Train Needs of safety arrangement such as screens, fences etc at platforms or between tracks when high speed train passes IC - Train High speed Train

Effects of high speed rail stop and Benefits of station establishment How many intermediate station for high speed rail stop can there be ? ? ? ? Existing railway and station Where to locate a station ? City New High speed line and station

Some general facts ! A High speed train at 300 km/h: Needs a distance of 18 km to reach the maximum speed of 300 km/h Needs a distance of 4,5 km to stop from the maximum speed of 300 km/h The addition time for an extra station stop is approx. 4,0 – 5,0 minutes A High speed train at 250 km/h: Needs a distance of 8,5 km to reach the maximum speed of 250 km/h Needs a distance of 3,0 km to stop from the maximum speed of 250 km/h The addition time for an extra station stop is approx. 3,5 – 4,5 minutes

Station Design – Experiences from other countries Determination of considerations for station provision Produce questionnaire to several railway authorities Analysis of responses to questionnaire Desk top study of international experience Production of summary infrastructure and operational costs Interim Report
