Presente When doing the register, to say that you’re present, boys say “Présent” and girls should say “Présente”. When the t at the end of a word is followed by an E is French, the is no longer silent.

Embedding the language Using the greetings as part of everyday routine in class e.g. Bonjour at the start of everyday, à demain at the end of the day and bon week-end on a Friday at the end of the school day! Do the register in French each morning – teacher says, “hacemos la lista” and pupils respond with “hola” or “presente” and “austente.” Use a Hola song and/or an Adios song at the start and end of each day.

Sample activities You will find a bank of sample activities which you can use to practise the vocabulary in the classroom. This is not a prescriptive list of activities and you can use or adapt them to suit the needs of your class.

¡Buenas! ¡Hola! ¿Como andas? ¿Que hay? Hola means hello, Buenas means good day (informally), que hay means what’s happening (literally what do you have?), como andas means how’s it going? (literally how are you walking?). ¿Que hay? ¿Como andas?

Mis amigos !todo el mundo! E.g. todo el mundo You can also add on mes amis (my friends) or tout le monde (everyone) if you like! E.g. Hey everyone! E.g. todo el mundo

Now choose a way of saying goodbye! ¡Adios! ¡Hasta luego! Now choose a way of saying goodbye! Adios and ciao mean goodbye, hasta luego means see you later, And Hasta la proxima means until next time. ¡Hasta la proxima! ¡Ciao!

Actividad 2 Hola y adios dancing!

Hola y adios dancing Pupils walk around the class whilst some French music plays. As they walk around, they should greet each other saying Bonjour! Teacher then plays more lively music and everyone skips and mimes wearing a backpack and waving to each other and saying “à demain!” to each other. Music gets even livelier and pupils now dance about saying “bon week-end!” Lastly the music is sad and they pretend to cry and look sad, waving each other goodbye saying “au revoir!”

Como se dice hola en todo el mundo How to say “hello” around the world! This activity is designed to show examples of different ways of greeting from around the world. Pupils can try each of them out as you go through them and then make up their own at the end.

Read and listen to the texts about how people greet each other in different countries and test them out in class! Can you create your own class greeting?

Y inventad Trabajad en un groupo Un saludo por la classe! Work in a group and invent a class greeting. You can ask pupils now to come up with some success criteria about what makes a good greeting for them and then ask them to invent their own in a group. Each of the groups can then present their greeting and the whole class can vote for their favourite one. Un saludo por la classe!

Actividad 4 Collecting Hellos!

Collecting “Hellos!” This activity could be organised in groups and could be run as a competition to see how many “Hellos” each group can find. In this task, pupils work to find as many ways of saying Hello as they can from either in the school or both in and out of school. This could then be used to make a display and could also generate discussion. Some facts on the number of language spoken around the world are included on the next slide! To support pupils with this, you can print off the next slide with vocabulary.
