When you meet someone for the first time, what kinds of phrases do you typically say to them? Please list five possible words/phrases that you might say when you meet someone for the first time. This will go on the left side of your notebook on page one and highlight the top of this page in Yellow since this is a bellwork page. 

3. There are a variety
There are a variety of phrases that you might say to a someone when you first meet a person, or if you run into someone you already know. *Highlight these notes in Green for Vocab Titled “Hola ¿Qué Tal?”

4. For example
We all know “Hola” means Hello. The H in Hola is silent! All of the other letters are phonetic, meaning they sound just like they look. O sounds O. L sounds like L. And A sounds like A. Hola = Hello But, let’s dive deeper. You typically don’t just say “Hello” and then walk away when you meet someone. You typically engage in a conversation. You might ask them how their day was, or how their afternoon is going, or how they are doing in general. Let’s take a look at what that looks like in Spanish.

5. Saludos Good Morning = Buenos Días
Good Afternoon/Good Evening = Buenas Tardes
Good Night/Good Evening = Buenas Noches
Buenas Noches and Buenas Tardes have “/” because in some cultures they have different times where these phrases are appropriate.

6. Cuando conoces a alguien
My name is ________ = Me llamo _______
What’s your name? = ¿Cómo te llamas? =This would be used if you are older than that person or maybe they are a cousin or someone you haven’t met. The “S” at the end means that you are speaking informally.
What’s your name? = ¿Cómo se llama Usted? = This is used if the person you are speaking to is older than you or is someone you need to show respect to.

7. It was nice meeting you
The Spanish language is rich and has a variety of ways to say the same thing. Some things may seem odd, but are extremely common in the Spanish language.
It’s nice to meet you = Mucho Gusto = (Literal translation “Much Pleasure”)
It was a pleasure to meet you = Encantado = (Literal translation “I’m enchanted to meet you”)
Sounds weird, but even T-Swift Stole this phrase for a song

8. It was nice meeting you too…
It was nice meeting you too = Igualmente = (Literal Translation – Equally)

9. What about when you run into someone you already know?
You’d probably ask them how they are doing, right? There’s a few ways to ask that.
How are you doing? = ¿Cómo estás? (This is informal, someone younger than you, a good friend, family member)
How are you doing? = ¿Cómo está Usted? (This is formal. Someone older than you or someone you need to show respect to (King, Mr. Dolan, Police Officer, etc.). A lot of cultures use this form until they get to know someone).
¿Qué Tal? Also means how are you doing.

10. ¿Cómo Respondes? Bien (well, fine) Muy bien (very well)
Más o Menos (so-so, I’m doing okay)
Normal (normal)
Regular (regular)

11. Despedidas = To say goodbye
Adiós (goodbye)
Hasta luego (see you later)
Chau (bye)
Hasta mañana (see you tomorrow)
Nos vemos (see you)
