Topic 1.7 Aircraft Salvage Procedures

Enabling Objectives: 1.11 FORMULATE the equipment/procedures to be used with lifting and hoisting crashed aircraft in accordance with NATOPS, U.S. Navy Aircraft Crash and Salvage Operations Manual (Afloat), NAVAIR 00‑80R‑19 current series. (CTTL 1.9) 1.12 PERFORM an aircraft salvage in accordance with in accordance with NATOPS, U.S. Navy Aircraft Crash and Salvage Operations Manual (Afloat), NAVAIR 00‑80R‑19, current series, while observing all applicable safety precautions. (CTTL 1.10 & 1.12)

Crash Lifting Procedures (Using Forklift) Aircraft Gear Damaged or Collapsed ‑ Equipment required: Crash forklift with padded extension (boom adapter) Crash dollies with pads Tailhook dolly Aircraft tie‑down chains Chocks

Crash Lifting Procedures (Using Forklift) Nylon straps/manila line Landing gear ground safety locks (down locks) Tow tractor Tow bar

Crash Lifting Procedures (Using Forklift) Salvage Procedures Chock main gear. Secure aircraft to deck with a minimum of four to six aircraft tie‑down chains. Insert down locks.

WARNING: AIRCRAFT SHALL BE SECURED IMMEDIATELY TO THE DECK. INADVERTENT MOVEMENT COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS OR FATAL INJURY TO PERSONNEL ON OR AROUND AIRCRAFT.

Crash Lifting Procedures (Using Forklift) Retract and secure tailhook, tailhook dolly may be required. Position forklift on aircraft. With padded extension (boom adapter) under aircraft at structural bulkhead, raise aircraft. Adjust tie‑downs and chocks as necessary. Lower gear and insert down locks. If not possible, position dolly under damaged gear, lower aircraft to dolly. Secure aircraft to dolly and flight deck.

CAUTION: CRASH DOLLIES, WHEN SUPPORTING AIRCRAFT WEIGHT AND BEING TOWED, HAVE UNPREDICTABLE TRACKING TENDENCIES. SUPPORTED WEIGHT MUST BE SECURED TO DOLLY FROM AS MANY SIDES AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT LOAD FROM SHIFTING.

Crash Lifting Procedures (Using Forklift) Attach tow bar to aircraft. Attach tow bar to tractor. Remove tie-downs and chocks; tow aircraft clear of the landing

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) Standard hand signals for crane operators and signal person. Hoist - With forearms vertical, forefinger pointing up move hand in small horizontal circle clockwise.

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) Lower - Arm extended downward, forefinger pointing down, move hand in small horizontal circles.

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) Raise Boom - Arm extended, fingers closed thumb pointing upward, move hand up and down.

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) Lower Boom - Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb pointing down, move hand up and down.

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) cont. Move Slowly - Use one hand to give the Hoist, Lower, Raise Boom, Lower Boom, Swing Boom, Travel or Rack, and place other hand motionless near the hand giving the motion signal.

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) cont. Travel - Arm extended forward hand open and slightly raised, wave forearm in direction of travel while facing in that direction.

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) cont. Emergency Stop - Arm extended, palm down, move hand rapidly right and left. Stop - Arm extended, palm down, hold position rigidly. Stop - Hold arms horizontally at sides fully extended

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) cont. Aircraft Gear Damaged, Collapsed, or Aircraft Catwalk Crash ‑ Equipment Required: Crash crane Belly bands or manufacturers sling Crash dollies and pads Tailhook dolly Aircraft tie‑down chains

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) cont. Chocks Down locks for aircraft Nylon straps and manila line Tow tractor Tow bar Cutting/welding equipment (As required) Forcible entry saw (As required) Safety harness Tending lines Skid plates (As required)

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) cont. Salvage Procedures Chock main landing gear Secure aircraft to deck with minimum of 4 to 6 point initial tie-downs Insert down locks, if possible Retract and secure tailhook, tailhook dolly may be required. Position crane with hook and sling over aircraft as needed.

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) cont. Install sling Take tension on sling Inspect for proper attachment at hook and aircraft. Attach stabilizing lines (2 minimum). Attach tag lines (2 minimum) Remove chains and chocks as necessary

WARNING: ENSURE THAT ALL PERSONNEL STAND CLEAR OF AIRCRAFT DURING HOISTING OPERATIONS.

Crash Hoisting Procedures (Using Crane) cont. Hoist aircraft and remove from landing area, use of crash dollies may be necessary If catwalk crash set aircraft on deck, use of crash dollies may be necessary. Secure aircraft to dolly and flight deck.

Sheared/Collapsed Nose Landing Gear Salvage Procedures Salvage Procedures Utilizing Crash Forklift

WARNING: AIRCRAFT SHALL BE SECURED IMMEDIATELY TO DECK. INADVERTENT MOVEMENT COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS OR FATAL INJURY TO PERSONNEL ON OR AROUND AIRCRAFT. THIS WARNING APPLIES TO ALL FOUR PROCEDURES. USE AT LEAST FOUR TO SIX TIE‑DOWNS, DEPENDING ON TYPE AIRCRAFT.

Sheared/Collapsed Nose Landing Gear Salvage Procedures Salvage Procedures Utilizing Crash Forklift Chock main landing gear. Secure aircraft to deck with minimum of 4 to 6 point initial tie-downs, install down locks. Retract and secure tail hook or use tail hook dolly. Position crash forklift at nose of aircraft. Raise aircraft nose, (relax tie-downs as necessary). With padded extension (boom adapter) under aircraft at structural bulkhead, raise aircraft.

Sheared/Collapsed Nose Landing Gear Salvage Procedures cont. Secure dolly to fuselage and main landing gear with nylon straps.

CAUTION: CRASH DOLLIES, WHEN SUPPORTING AIRCRAFT WEIGHT AND BEING TOWED, HAVE UNPREDICTABLE TRACKING TENDENCIES. SUPPORTED WEIGHT MUST BE SECURED TO DOLLY FROM AS MANY SIDES AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT LOAD FROM SHIFTING. THIS CAUTION APPLIES TO ALL FOUR FOLLOWING PROCEDURES.

Sheared/Collapsed Nose Landing Gear Salvage Procedures cont. Attach tow bar to dolly and tractor, remove chocks and tie‑downs tow aircraft clear of landing area.
