Year 6 Parents' SATs Meeting 22nd November 2016

Aims of the session To share important information about KS2 SATs 2017 To answer any questions about KS2 SATs Discuss / share ideas about how you as a parent can help your child at home

What are KS2 SATs? Standard Assessment Tests End of Key Stage test for 11–year–olds Covering reading; grammar, punctuation & spelling (GPS) and mathematics The tests are on set days in the week commencing the 8th May. Writing, Maths, Reading, and Science will also be assessed by teacher assessment

What are KS2 SATs? These tests in English and mathematics will reflect the new national curriculum and are intended to be more rigorous. Pupils took the new tests for the first time in May 2016. As part of the national curriculum review, levels have been abolished.

Schools will no longer be reporting levels at the end of the year, instead every pupil registered will receive: a raw score (number of marks awarded); a scaled score (between 80 – 120); and confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard

What are scaled scores? They are used all over the world so that comparisons can be made between tests The national curriculum tests are designed to be as similar as possible year on year, but slight differences in difficulty will occur between years. Scaled scores maintain their meaning over time so that two pupils achieving the same scaled score on two different tests will have demonstrated the same attainment.

What is the expectation? Children who have a scaled score of 100 or above will have met the expected standard. Children will also be awarded a teacher assessment for each area. This will be either: Working at the expected standard Not working at the expected standard Working at greater depth (writing only)

How is SATs week organised? A timetable is issued to school, telling us on which days/sessions tests must be administered. All children must sit the tests at the same time. Test papers can only be opened 1 hour before the tests begin. Tests are completed in classrooms, with any displays that may help covered over. Children are divided into groups for test administration to ensure they are properly supported and feel secure.

SATs Timetable Year 6 SATs Week 8th – 12th May 2017 Monday 8th May Tuesday 9th May Wednesday 10th May Thursday 11th May Friday 12th May English - Reading Test English – Grammar, punctuation paper 1 Spelling test – paper 2 Maths Paper 1 – Arithmetic Maths Paper 2 - Reasoning Maths Paper 3 - Reasoning No tests!! Treat Day!

During SATs week: Please ensure that your child is in school every day during SATs week. Ensure that they are in school on time Make sure they get enough sleep! Please don’t book anything during this week e.g. doctor’s appointments, holidays etc If your child is ill, let us know asap.

English SATs English SATs consist of: A reading test A grammar, punctuation and spelling test Writing – teacher assessed – No Test

Reading A range of texts will be included in the tests, including fiction, non- fiction and poetry. Texts will be appropriate in terms of content and difficulty for pupils aged 11. This will include texts that are age-appropriate (themes in narratives will be familiar and non- fiction texts will be suitable for 10–11 year olds) and that require comprehension skills. The texts will be ordered by increasing reading demand within the reading booklet.

Reading

How can parents help with reading? Ensure your child reads every night! Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction. Try to ask them questions about the text. Help them with the different skills of reading especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text. Speed reading

Grammar, Spelling, Punctuation

Writing – teacher assessment The children’s writing is assessed throughout the year No test for writing composition All children’s work will be used to come to a judgement: Working towards the expected standard Working at the expected standard Working at greater depth within the standard

How can parents help with writing? Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types Spelling – using the spelling lists given out at parents’ evening (also available on the school website) Encouraging your child to complete all homework and discussing their work with them. Encouraging children to write whenever possible

Two written test papers Mathematics Mathematics SATs consist of: A mental mathematics test. Two written test papers Test A and Test B This year, there will not be a calculator test.

Some questions are worth one mark and therefore accuracy is important. Other questions are worth two marks and even if the answer is wrong, a mark may be given for correct working. Teachers may read questions in both written papers to pupils if asked.

TIMES TABLES!!! How can parents help with Maths? Support with homework – not just helping with the Maths but reading the question can really help. TIMES TABLES!!! Help your child to check their work through – this will help them to spot mistakes that can sometimes be easily fixed. SUMDOG – available on the internet from home Practise of the 4 operations. Formal methods

What are we doing? Writing, Reading and Maths each morning Breakfast booster after February half term – more details to follow Homework Revision books – available to order tonight Test preparation Encouragement Trying to make it fun!

How can parents help? The best help is interest taken in learning and progress. Supporting homework. Good communication between the school and home. Getting a good sleep on a school night! Ensuring attendance at school from now until SATs
