Presentation transcript:

An Overview of Traumatic Brain Injury Research during the Years 1991-2004 Wne-Ta Chiu1 and Yuh-Shan Ho2 1Department of Neurosurgery, Taipei Medical University - Wan-Fang Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan 2Bibliometric Centre, Taipei Medical University - Wan-Fang Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan Introduction Science would not exist if the results of scientific work were not communicated. Communication is the driving force of science. Publication to exchange research findings is an important aspect of science and is a method to evaluate the productivity of desire parties. Garfield indicated that proper bibliometric analysis could identify the present focus of scientific research. The objective of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of all traumatic brain injury-related publications in Science Citation Index (SCI) from 1991-2004. Methods Documents used in this study were based on the databases of the SCI which was accessed from the ISI Web of Science, Philadelphia, PA, USA. The keywords “traumatic brain injury”, “head injury”, and “head trauma” were used to search for papers published SCI. Results Thirteen document types were found in the total of 15,677 documents. The paper article was the most-frequently used document type comprising 75% of the total production. Study was focused on a bibliometric analysis of 11,818 articles. Table 1. Major characteristics of the research Figure 1. Annual publication output PY, Publication year P, No. of articles PG, Total pages AU, No. of authors J, No. of journals SP, single country publications CP, international collaborative publications Figure 2. Distribution of journal’s category Table 2. Publication activity of top ten countries Conclusions An increasing number of papers since 1991 and author numbers indicate a continuous growth of the scientific community. The most used author keyword in traumatic brain injury research was ‘intracranial pressure’. The 3 most productive corresponding institutes were the Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Texas. The most productive corresponding country was also the US. The most-frequently published article was published in Brain Injury and in the ISI category of Neurosciences.
