COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

Communicable diseases are diseases caused by the direct and indirect spread of pathogens from one person to another.

Use these sources to research the information United States National Library of Medicine Medline Plus Center for Disease Control and Prevention

What are pathogens? Disease producing organisms

TYPES OF PATHOGENS BACTERIA FUNGI PROTOZOANS WORMS VIRUSES

Multiply rapidly - 1 = 4 billion in 15 hours Most are harmless Bacteria Microscopic Multiply rapidly - 1 = 4 billion in 15 hours Most are harmless Must have a food supply, suitable temp.,moisture, and darkness

Is E. coli Bacteria Good or Bad?

Resident Bacteria- Live in your mouth, intestines, and skin THEY ARE GOOD FOR YOU !!!

Poisons caused by bacteria Examples are: Toxins Poisons caused by bacteria Examples are: Food poisoning, strep throat, T/B, pneumonia.

One of your bodies worst enemies No Cure Very specific cell invaders Rabies/ Brain Polio/ Nervous System HIV/Immune system

Fungi Prefer dark, damp environments Invade mainly hair, nails and skin Examples are Ringworm and Athletes Foot

PROTOZOANS Common in tropical areas that have poor sanitation. Examples are Malaria - Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease of humans and other animals. It begins with a bite from an infected female mosquito, which introduces the protozoan through saliva into the circulatory system.

__Worms__ Flatworms invade the blood Tapeworms live in the intestines Roundworms infect the intestines, muscles, and fluids under the skin Example is trichinosis / infected pork

How are these pathogens spread ?

INDIRECT CONTACT Coughing Sneezing Touching infected objects

DIRECT CONTACT STD’s KISSING

CONTACT WITH ANIMALS OR INSECTS

Fortunately our bodies have defense mechanisms against diseases

ANTIBODIES- Are proteins released into the blood to destroy or neutralize a specific pathogen.

BEHAVIORS TO AVOID COMMUNICABLE DISEASES Bathe or shower daily Avoid sharing utensils Store and Prepare food safely Wash your hands Avoid contact with sick people Eat well Exercise Get enough rest

Vaccines Provide active or long term immunity Dead or weakened viruses LIVE-weakened KILLED-requires booster TOXOIDS-chemically treated RECOMBANT-cloned virus

ACTIVE IMMUNITY-body develops usually long lasting PASSIVE-mother to child, short term

YOU CAN BECOME IMMUNE TO A DISEASE IN 2 WAYS. By having it already Vaccines
