Danish Country Report NordBalt Seminar 18 – 19 September 2008, Liepãja, Latvia Per Jacobsen Director General (p@vd.dk)

Main Topics Road safety Denmark’s Transport Infrastructure 2030 The political follow up: a new infrastructure investment plan and CO2 -reduction plan Fehmern Belt link

Road safety, Denmark

Road Traffic Fatalities Scandinavia 1997- 2008

Road Traffic Fatalities, Denmark 1935 - 2007

The Road Network

Mobility in focus - 6 focus areas The orbital transport network in the Copenhagen area must be completed (roads and rail) A complete plan for the development of the infrastructure in the urban region of East Jutland must be prepared Effective linking of the individual regions to the overall transport corridors and hubs must be ensured The Danish gateways towards the rest of the world must form a central part of an effective transport network Intelligent technological solutions must ensure optimal utilisation of the infrastructure The effort to limit the impact of transport on the environment and the climate must be intensified.

The orbital network Greater Copenhagen Area Better public transport – reliable and high frequency Reroute car traffic away from the city centre Better park&ride facilities at the train stations Urban development close to train stations

A urban structure plan in Eastern Jutland Transport capacity in the main transport corridors must be improved Public transport must be improved

Effective linking of all regions to the overall transport corridors and hubs Removing bottle necks Improvements to ensure effective and secure roads in relation to heavy vehicles Minor investments with large effects Traffic round and not through the cities

Gateways to Denmark - a central part of a effective transportsystem Priority to the most important freight transport modes Freight on ships and railways instead of road transport. Gateways need lot of space. Denmark as gateway to the Baltic and Skandinavian Areas should be developed

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Use ITS to make better use of the total transport system, improve road safety and minimize the impact on the environment Supple flow of traffic Route planning

The effort to limit transport’s impact on the environment must be intensified Better public transport and modal split Intelligent Transport Systems Improved Urban planning as a tool to increase use of public transport More initiatives to reduce noise from traffic Improved energy efficiency in the transport sector Environment friendly fuels Improved information concerning environment and CO2-effects The commission recommends transport and climate action plan

Need for a cross-disciplinary effort Investments in projects with the highest economic return The necessary maintenance of infrastructure should be ensured Involvement of private competences Physical planning, including urban and commercial development, should be better coordinated with the infrastructure planning through unified planning Further focus on improvement of road safety.

The political follow up The government has decided to set up a new infrastructure investment plan and a CO2-reduction plan The plans are scheduled to be published this autumn
