P,Q,E Point Quote Explain Point: answer the question you asked. Quote: find something from the book to prove what you said. Explain: write how your QUOTE proves your POINT in your own words and NOT just repeating your point.

Chapter 13 Question: Does Bruno still miss Berlin as much as when he arrived at Out-With? Answer: Bruno doesn’t miss Berlin as much as when he arrived at Out-With. We know this because in the story it says that Bruno’s long walks had “started to make up for all the times he had missed Berlin”. This shows us that Bruno is moving on from his old life in Berlin and that he is getting used to his new life at Out-With.

Question: Does Bruno trust Maria? (P,Q,E). Chapter 13 Question: Does Bruno trust Maria? (P,Q,E).

Chapter 13 Answer: Yes, Bruno does trust Maria. We know this because he asks her a question about Pavel that he wouldn’t ask anyone else. He says: “if I ask you this question, will you promise not to tell anyone that I asked it?” This shows us that Bruno feels he can talk to Maria and that she is like a friend to him.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Chapter 13 – part one (a). Does Bruno still miss Berlin as much as when he arrived at Out-With? (P,Q,E). Does Bruno trust Maria? (P,Q,E). What does Bruno say to make Maria’s face freeze? Why does she react like this? Shmuel disagrees with something Bruno says in this chapter. What is it? Why do the boys have different opinions about this?

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Chapter 13 – part one (b). Bruno tells Maria he “doesn’t understand” why Pavel is not a doctor any more. Maria says that “none of us do”. What do you think Maria is hinting at here? “The soldiers don’t normally like people getting better,” says Shmuel. Why does Shmuel think this? Bruno says something to Pavel that makes us think that Bruno is a very naïve boy. What does he say?

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas Chapter 13 – part two. Bruno says about Pavel that “he seemed to grow smaller and smaller each week.” Why do you think this is? Father tells Bruno that history is important. What reason does he give Bruno? What do we learn new about Lieutenant Kotler’s father? How does Bruno’s father react to this news? What mistake does Pavel make? Why do you think he makes this mistake? What happens at the end of this chapter to make Bruno think that Shmuel might have been right when he said there were no good soldiers?
