How to stay safe using the internet and app’s? SafeSurfing Module 3 How to stay safe using the internet and app’s? September 2016

This project wants to help people with learning disabilities use the Internet safely.

You can go on the Internet, There are lots of things you can do with mobile devices, (such as mobile phones, smartphones, tablets and i-Pads). You can go on the Internet, you can share pictures and information on Social Networks, you can keep in touch with friends and you can download apps and online games.

What apps do you use? Can anyone tell us what these popular apps are: Facebook Instagram WhatsApp Google Maps Twitter How many of these do you use? Which ones?

You may find several apps on your tablet or mobile phone. You may find others on the Internet. Some apps are free but some you have to pay for. Many apps require your personal data.

Facebook Facebook allows you to keep in touch with your friends. You can also post about what you are doing and where you are. Facebook each person has a “wall” where we can post about what we are doing, where we are and can show our pictures. Sometimes people can make nasty comments on what we post or pictures we share. We will show you in module 4 how to block these people. We can also write on other peoples walls and make comments on what they write or on pictures they post. It is important to remember that all pictures we post online can be copied and used by other people without us even knowing.

Instagram Instagram is an app for pictures. You can take pictures and post them online. Thanks to Instagram we can take a pictures or videos and show them to anyone who follows our account. We can also watch other peoples pictures and videos. We can access Instagram on the PC or on our mobile phone or tablet. You shouldn’t post pictures that are private: because lots of people can see them, even people we don’t know. These would be pictures of us in the bathroom or in other very private situations, These pictures can also be copied and used or shared by other people like facebook.

WhatsApp WhatsApp is an app that is used for texting and chatting with contacts in our mobile phone or smartphone list. WhatsApp is free to send pictures and video’s. You are able to see when people have read your message.

that is useful to look for streets Google Maps Google Maps is an app that is useful to look for streets or places we do not know. If we link Google Maps to other apps, such as Facebook, we can show other people where we are and where we go. We need to be very careful in posting our location online. For example, if we post our location with Google Maps people will know where we are and this could include people who we do not know.

You can also “follow” other people to see what they are doing Twitter Twitter allows you to post about what you are doing and pictures, like Facebook. You can also “follow” other people to see what they are doing It is possible to use Twitter on your pc, tablet or mobile phone. You can also link your Twitter feed to your Facebook account, so when you post on one it updates the other. If you do this be careful as you might not want everyone on your Facebook to see what you are posting on Twitter, and visa versa.

YouTube Is another way of sharing videos When we take a video of ourself or of our friends and we upload it, we have to remember that other people can watch them. Even people we don’t know! These videos can also be shared by anyone on to facebook and twitter

Some questions If we post a photo on Facebook, who is going to see it? Is it good to post where we are? Can the videos that we put on YouTube be seen on Facebook?

It is important to know how to be online safely. Risks Even though being online can be really fun and useful we need to be aware of the dangers. It is important to know how to be online safely.

Games Many games can be downloaded for free. For example Farmville or Candy Crush You may have to pay for extra lives or special features on the game. Apps can take money without us even knowing. Before you provide your card data please always ask for help from someone you trust .

Staying Safe Do not give people your mobile phone, tablet or smartphone because they may read your personal data. Use a code or a password to protect personal data on your mobile device. Dont give anyone you do not know your phone number. Be careful on what wifi connection you use.
