TASK: Write a caption (2 sentences MAX) for the image below. Caption Challenge TASK: Write a caption (2 sentences MAX) for the image below. Key Learning Question: What s desertification and how does it link to the desert biome? 1

Title: Desertification Key Learning Question: What is desertification and what are the challenges faced by the people living in the Sahel how does it link to the desert biome?

Life on the edge – the Sahel

Desertification Desertification is the process where land turns into desert. Two thirds of the African continent are now classified as desert or drylands. Desertification is now affecting a quarter of the world's population. 4

What happens when the ground is really dry and then it rains? Task: What happens when the ground is really dry and then it rains? We call this “surface runoff” and it can wash away the soil because of soil erosion, so crops can’t grow. The land turns to desert in a process called ‘desertification’ Demonstrate this with a dry sponge

1. Describe where the Sahel region is Task: 1. Describe where the Sahel region is 2. Describe the temperature and rainfall of the Sahel region Keyword – ‘arid’ – meaning dry & hot

Desertification Case Studies DESCRIBE what is happening in these 2 regions. Pick 1 region and EXPLAIN the consequences of desertification on the people of that region. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaaXqKKv4ko http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92bUMNz-mJE Key Learning Question: What is desertification and how does it link to the desert biome? 12

What would you do to stop this happening and save your farmland? Task: What would you do to stop this happening and save your farmland? This man, in Mali, came up with a simple idea – DIGUETTES – a line of stones on the ground which block the surface runoff and allow the water to soak in. He literally ‘stopped the desert’

Task: Discuss the challenges facing people living in the Sahel region (8 marks) Rainy season/arid/surface runoff/overgrazing/population growth/deforestation/desertification/famine/diguettes Success criteria: Where is the Sahel? What has caused desertification there? What are the challenges faced by the people living there? Are there any solution?
