3 Use the flow diagram to explain why the Sahel suffers from desertification.

4 Solutions? The Great Green Wall THE GREAT GREEN WALL
The Great Green Wall THE GREAT GREEN WALL The Great Green Wall is an African-led project with an epic ambition: to grow an 8,000km natural wonder of the world across the entire width of Africa. Its goal is to provide food, jobs and a future for the millions of people who live in a region on the frontline of climate change. Once completed, the Great Green Wall will be the largest living structure on Earth and a new Wonder of the World. Write down what you like about this project.

5 Explain how these may stop it working..

6 Acacia Trees What are the benefits of this project?
"Forests and trees in arid zones are central to understanding the process of desertification - they provide local communities with sustainable livelihoods but also fodder livestock, fuelwood, medicine, timber, resin and gums. The project was set up in Senegal ,2004 with the goal of helping people to plant and manage of acacia forests in an effort to halt desertification, while helping villages in at-risk areas. As well as providing foliage for animals and fuel for cooking, the trees also produce arabic gum, which is a product that is used in the food and pharmaceuticals industries. What problems might there be?

7 Magic Stones (Diguettes or demi lunes) Burkina Faso
Between 200,000 and 300,000 hectares (500,000 and 740,000 acres) of barren land -- an area roughly the size of Luxembourg -- have been rehabilitated. Magic Stones (Diguettes or demi lunes) Burkina Faso Magic stones – circles of stones are placed on the ground to hold water on the soil rather than let it run quickly across the surface. This reduces soil erosion.‘ What is so good about this method?

8 Evaluate (or see next slide for challenge)
Evaluate the different strategies available to reduce the impacts of desertification. (6 marks) Which is most effective and why? Which is next effective and why? Which is least effective and why? Do you think there is anything else that can be done?

9 9 mark question Life in the Sahel need not be a struggle for survival. Management strategies give hope for a better future. To what extent do you agree with this statement? It is a 40 mark A2 essay but reckon we could use it to help practice to what extent! Especially for the top! So good opportunity to do an on the other hand activity!
