Map Coordinates Review. Equator A line that divides the planet into northern and southern hemispheres Has a measure of 0 degrees of Latitude.
 Distance measure in degrees- from 0 o to 90 o North or South of the equator  Equator- primary reference point  Lines are called parallels- form complete.
Using Latitude and Longitude.  Relative location: describing the location of a place in relation to another place.  Absolute location: exact location.

Presentation transcript:

Absolute and Relative Location Latitude and Longitude Hemispheres

Warm up: Type 1: In at least three lines, completely discuss how a person uses lines of longitude and latitude to determine a specific location (What do you do first? What are the step? What directions do you go? Can you give an example?)

Absolute and Relative Location Why is “location” important?

Absolute Location What is it? the exact point where a place is located (often given in terms of latitude and longitude)

Absolute Location Examples: Havertown, Pennsylvania is located at 40 degrees north (latitude), 75.3 degrees west (longitude) Haverford Middle School is located at 1701 Darby Road Havertown, PA 19083

where a place is in relation to other places Relative Location What is it? where a place is in relation to other places Examples?

Examples: New York is north of Pennsylvania. Relative Location Examples: New York is north of Pennsylvania.

Relative Location The Haverford Middle School football field and track is south of the middle school.

My house is the third house on the left. Relative Location My house is the third house on the left.

Vocabulary: Relative Location Relative location describes where something is located in relation to other things. My house is located 2 miles from the mall. (distance) Our school is located one block over from Rock n Roll Tacos. (landmarks) Dallas is 3.5 hours from Austin. (time) Texas is south of Oklahoma. (direction)

Describe the relative location of Havertown, Pennsylvania using direction. Remember to use distance, landmarks, time, and direction Havertown

We do… You are going to work with your table partners to evaluate and determine the examples of relative and absolute location.

You do… You will complete the exit ticket to evaluate and determine the relative/absolute locations.

Latitude: imaginary lines that run east to west (parallel to the equator) also called parallels There are 90 degrees north of the equator and 90 degrees south of the equator

Latitude:

Longitude: imaginary lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole (measuring distance east or west of the prime meridian) also called meridians There are 180 degrees east of the prime meridian and 180 degrees west of the prime meridian.

Longitude:

Latitude and Longitude

A hemisphere is half of Earth. Hemispheres A hemisphere is half of Earth. The equator (0 degrees latitude) divides Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude) divides Earth into the Western Hemisphere and the Eastern Hemisphere.
