Workshop Presentation – the Sheffield Project Breakout Groups – 6 questions on student-led PDP & HEAR Report Back Plenary Set scene on what information literacy is
PDP in Geography at Sheffield Regular meetings with Personal Tutors Focus largely on Academic Progress Some discussion of other PDP issues – but no compulsory element
Issues Scheme is voluntary because Student engagement low Non-vocational degree Staff not qualified to provide guidance on personal development/employability Insufficient staff time for comprehensive annual review Student engagement low
Solutions Incentivize student engagement by Rewarding participation - including through HEAR Designing a student-led system Students build portfolio of evidenced PDP activity ‘Pick & mix’ selection of tasks to complete, including: Training Peer review and planning activities Career research exercise Engagement with the Careers Service Sufficient activity qualifies for HEAR recognition Applied for HEA funding to develop scheme
Role of HEAR Continual reference point to support (i) progress review (what’s in my HEAR now?) (ii) development planning (what do I want in my HEAR by the end? do I need to take extra action?) Can reward PDP engagement in Section 6.1
Set scene on what information literacy is
Breakout Groups Is student-led PDP feasible? Is HEAR a suitable way of recording/rewarding PDP? 6 questions to help think through these - 5 mins each What would encourage students to take a lead with PDP? How structured should a student-led scheme be? How could peer mentoring be implemented effectively? How could PDP activities be recorded? How should engagement with PDP be recognised/rewarded? Would rewarding PDP rival extra-curricular award schemes? Summarise thoughts on flip chart paper as you move round Set scene on what information literacy is
