SUN MOVEMENT IN SOMALI PROGRAMME MEETING GAROWE PUNTLAND 14-15 – February– 2016

The facts Globally over 165 million children under 5 are stunted as a result of malnutrition. 52 million children are too thin and require special treatment. At the same time, 43 million children are overweight - some as a result of poverty, when families are unable to afford a balanced, nutritious diet. 2 billion people are deficient in key vitamins & minerals

Nutrition and Food security in SDGs SDG 2: end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture Target 2.2 By 2030 , end all forms of malnutrition, including, achieving by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons SDG3: ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages Target 3.2 … reduce under five mortality

Health Assembly 2012 Resolution: 40% reduction of the global number of children under 5 who are stunted Target 1: 50% reduction of anemia in women of reproductive age Target 2: Target 3: 30% reduction of low birth weight Increase exclusive breastfeeding rates in the first 6 months up to at least 50% Target 4: Target 5: No increase in childhood overweight Reducing and maintaining childhood wasting to less than 5% Target 6:

What is Scaling Up Nutrition SUN is a unique Movement founded on the principle that all people have a right to food & good nutrition. It unites people from governments, civil society, the United Nations, donors, businesses & researchers – in a collective effort to improve nutrition.

When SUN was established and why? The SUN Movement was launched in September 2010. Dr David Nabarro, Special Representative for Food Security and Nutrition to the United Nations Secretary-General, was appointed as the Coordinator of the SUN Movement Small SUN Movement Secretariat was set up a in Geneva. the end of 2010, four countries had indicated their intention to scale up nutrition. The number had risen to 24 by the end of 2011 and now stands at 56 countries. Somalia was the 52nd country to join the movement

The vision of SUN movement is a world without Hunger Goals The goals address immediate and underlying causes of malnutrition being established by each country participating in the Movement

Four Strategic Process Within each country, SUN Movement stakeholders are brought together around 4 key processes: Creating Political and Operational Platforms, with strong in-country leadership & shared multi-stakeholder spaces where people come together to align their activities & take joint responsibility for scaling up nutrition. Incorporating Best Practices into National Policies for scaling up proven interventions; including the adoption of effective laws & policies 1 2 Align Actions Across Sectors around high quality and well-costed country plans, with an agreed results framework and mutual accountability. Increasing Resources and Monitoring Implementation for coherent, aligned, effective action and maximum impact. 3 4

Specific Actions for Nutrition Nutrition-Sensitive Strategies Nutrition-sensitive strategies increase the impact of specific actions for nutrition Specific Actions for Nutrition Nutrition-Sensitive Strategies Agriculture: Making nutritious food more accessible to everyone, and supporting small farms as a source of income for women and families Clean Water & Sanitation: Improving access to reduce infection and disease Education & Employment: Making sure children have the nutrition needed to learn and earn a decent income as adults Health Care: Access to services that enable women & children to be healthy Support for Resilience: Establishing a stronger, healthier population and sustained prosperity to better endure emergencies and conflicts Feeding Practices & Behaviors: Encouraging exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months of age and continued breastfeeding together with appropriate and nutritious food up to 2 years of age and beyond Fortification of foods: Enabling access to nutrients through incorporating them into foods Micronutrient supplementation: Direct provision of extra nutrients Treatment of acute malnutrition: Enabling persons with moderate and severe malnutrition to access effective treatment

Country Progress at Federal Level Somalia become the 52nd member of the SUN initiative in May 2014 with the nomination of the SUN focal point. Somalia SUN secretariat is hosted in the office of Prime Minister. In Sept 2015 the new Prime Minister of Somalia renewed Somalia’s commitment to scaling up nutrition. SUN high ministerial committee established and the first meeting took place on 27th December 2015. The ministerial meeting will be held on quarterly basis. Regularly participate to the quarterly country conference calls. The country self assessment report for 2014-2015 submitted and available online

Country Progress at Zonal Level Puntland launched SUN initiative in Feb 2015; Zonal SUN secretariat is hosted in the office of Vice President of Puntland. At least 2 inter-ministerial meetings were conducted in 2015. Participated in global gatherings 2015. Somaliland plan to launch the initiative in 2016.

Ways forward At Federal Level SUN to be launched (Date will be announced by the PM probably 1st March 2016) Strengthen/expanding the Multi-stakeholder platform Multi-sectoral national nutrition plan, with a common result framework and M&E framework to be developed Prioritize and align programs to the common result frame work
