The WHY, WHAT and HOW of FECOASTS FutureEarthCoasts.org GLOBAL CHANGE IN THE COASTAL ZONE WELCOME The Future Earth Coasts International Project Office is located at MaREI The WHY, WHAT and HOW of FECOASTS MaREI Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy Ireland Beaufort Building | Environmental Research Institute | University College Cork | IMERC Campus | Haulbowline Road | Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork | P43-C573 | Ireland FutureEarthCoasts.org

WHY | contributing to society’s global priorities

WHAT | finding effective solutions to existing & future coastal challenges FutureEarthCoasts.org

HOW | a global platform enabling international scientific collaboration Supporting integrated research on grand challenges and transformations to sustainability Strengthening global partnerships between researchers, funders and users of research Communicating science to society and society to science Observing, explaining, understanding, projecting earth, environmental and societal system trends, drivers and processes and their interactions; anticipating global thresholds and risks.

HOW DOES IT FIT | four inter-related themes Dynamic coasts explores how and why coastal systems are ever-changing from both natural processes and human interventions. Pathways to coastal sustainability explores prevailing practices, institutional structures and processes of development. Human development and coasts considers the consequences of human activity on coastal systems to produce frameworks to address constraints and opportunities for sustainability. Our coastal futures will chart a new landscape to co-design and co-produce knowledge to develop scenarios for more sustainable coastal futures. FutureEarthCoasts.org

HOW DO WE DO IT| Targeting interfaces: bridging policy, HOW DO WE DO IT| Targeting interfaces: bridging policy, practice and society through science Co-design PRACTICE SOCIETY POLICY Science Linkage between society and policy Societal pressure for change from perceived or real injustice Transformation Innovation between policy and practice: Non-linear changes in response to untenable conditions Justice Driver between society and practice: Shifts in social values and priorities
