ENPH 115 Global Environmental and Public Health Millennium Development Goal 3

Monday discussion Final blog assignment A summary of your region’s progress on all MDGs Your recommendations: To reach unmet MDGs For future human development initiatives Think of initiatives that helped other regions meet MDGs (ie eliminating school fees). Could these be applied in your region? Consider recommending successful interventions in other regions to reach unmet MDGs in yours if culturally appropriate Recommendations for future human development (post-2015) should reflect gaps your group notices in the current MDGs Example from Monday: Measuring enrollment vs quality of education Current MDG indicators do not reflect quality of ed, yet this is very important for human development Perhaps future indicators should measure teacher training or some other indicator of quality?

Objectives By the end of class, you should be able to: Describe MDG 3 objectives, targets and indicators Explain the status of MDG 3 in your group’s region in a blog post

Millennium Development Goal 3 Goal: Promote gender equality and empower women Target 3.A: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015 Indicator 3.1 Ratios of girls to boys in primary, secondary and tertiary education Indicator 3.2 Share of women in wage employment in the non-agricultural sector Indicator 3.3 Proportion of seats held by women in national parliament

Millennium Development Goal 3

What is the relationship between women’s empowerment and health?

Millennium Development Goal 3 Example, goal 3 in Algeria: Link to MDG official indicators

Example intervention Reading this week: “Men Get Familiar With Child, Maternal Nutrition, and Health ” Purpose of WFP (World Food Programme) in Bolivia Promote gender equality Equal roles Men targeted in training about child health and nutrition Quote from a male participant: “It is great that we, men and boys, increase our knowledge on these topics so that we also take on responsibilities with the nutrition and care of our children. Today I learned that if it takes two, male and female, to make a baby, it should also take two to raise the child in good health.”

Blog 3 Things to consider: How is MDG 3 related to health? Why is there an MDG dedicated to women? What’s being done in your region/country to empower women? To promote gender equality? Has it worked? Why or why not? Save your blog frequently on Weebly! Post blog text and URL (do not forget to click publish!) to D2L discussion “blog 3” Include group member names present and quiz question Subject line: region and group number Quiz answer to D2L dropbox
