2  When populations have access on an ongoing basis to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs  Strengthening the foundations of long-term global food security; emergency food assistance, increased funding for rural development and international collaboration  Australia will support increased agricultural productivity (est. $170 million) by increasing investments in agricultural research.  12 May 2009, announced was a four-year, $464 million global food security initiative. The initiative aims to assist countries in Asia, the Pacific and Africa affected by the global food crisis; ongoing food insecurity and price volatility is having on the poor in developing countries. Goal 1; Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty

3  Children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling  Promoting equity (providing education for all), improving quality and strengthening education systems in our bilateral partner countries.  Aims to reach the disadvantaged and marginalised; through the provision of more equitable access to quality education for girls and boys with disabilities.  Improve the functioning of national education systems to enable more girls and boys to complete primary school and progress to higher levels of education  Improve the relevance and quality of education, including in vocational and technical education, so students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for life and productive employment. Goal 2; Achieve universal primary education

4  Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education; Improving female health and education.  Providing access to economic resources  Helping more women take on leadership roles in government, business, schools and within their community  Help women who were subjected to violence  Help more girls attend school  Improving the health and wellbeing of women and children Goal 3; Promote gender equality and empower women

5  Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under- five mortality rate  Delivered successful child vaccination programs in developing countries over the past decade.  Improving child nutrition; been tested and treated; helped train families in low-cost organic farming methods  Training nursing students Goal 4; Reduce child mortality

6  Reduce by three-quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio and achieve universal access to reproductive health  Supported the training of birth attendants and midwives  Programs to improve health services in remote areas have helped give rural women better health support.  Employment of more female health staff and purpose-built maternal and child health centres at district hospitals Goal 5; Improve maternal health

7  Begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, the incidence of malaria and other major diseases  Achieve, by 2010, universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS for all those who need it  increased demand for testing services, condoms, counselling and HIV treatment options.  increase the rate of voluntary testing and community acceptance of those living with HIV. MALARIA  Providing insecticide-treated bed nets and insecticide treatment for houses Goal 6; Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

8  Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs  Reverse the loss of environmental resources  Reduce biodiversity loss  Halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation  Improvement in the lives of slum dwellers  Move toward lower carbon growth and environmental sustainability through a range of international and regional programs  Help countries adapt to the impacts of climate change Goal 7; Ensure environmental sustainability
