2 Millennium development Goals Millennium Declaration signed by 189 countries, September, 2000  Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger (people living on less than a dollar a day, Achieve full and productive employment) (42% still are poor, even though 4 th largest economy

3 MDGs  Promote gender equality and empower women. (Women are disproportionately represented among India’s poor, Half of them cannot read, Under-represented in employment sector, Gap between male and female wages has increased, Preference for sons; infanticide and neglect of girls, one in three women reports domestic violence

4 Continue  Achieve universal primary education (Only 70% enrolled attend school regularly, girls drop-out)  Reduce child mortality (A quarter of the world’s newborn deaths occur in India, A child dies from a preventable disease every 15 seconds)

5 MDGs  Improve maternal health (Over a fifth of the world’s maternal deaths occur in India, A woman dies in childbirth every 5 minutes)  : Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases (One fifth of the world’s new cases of TB occur in India and an estimated 2.4 million people are living with HIV)

6 MDGs  Ensure environmental sustainability (42 Million lives in slums, 45% no access to sanitation)  Develop a global partnership for development

7 Gender and Sex  People are born male or female, but learn to be girls and boys who grow into women and men. They are taught what the appropriate behavior and attitudes, roles and activities are for them, and how they should relate to other people. This learned behavior is what makes up gender identity, and determine gender roles.

8 Gender is a dynamic concept  Gender roles for men and women vary (i) from one culture to another (ii) from one social group to another within same culture  Further culture is dynamic  Socio-economic conditions change over time  So Gender pattern change with them

9 Aspects of Gender Differentiation  In relation to work  In relation to human rights  In relation to culture and religion  In relation to sharing the world’s resources and benefits

10 Video; Communication Tool  Video is a powerful and honest communication medium which should be in the hands of common people in a country like ours (Quote by Sewa)

11 Continue  Video - a tool for change, the voice of the people.  Visual media is one of the most powerful tools for communicating.  A tool to reach those who are marginalized.(Does not require skills/literacy)  Bridge gap between various groups

12 Objectives  Dissemination of information  Tool for training and teaching new skills, ideas, designs or methods of doing things  Raise awareness about social and economic issues those central to the Communities  A tool to articulate their problems and demands and formulate strategies.

13 Continue  Inform communities about government policies and programs including national development plans and programs.  Creating visibility and initiating policy changes by addressing decision makers and policy makers.  Develop fresh connections and wider sharing of information

14 Issues; videos can be produced.  Societal attitudes, Practices; KAP  Gender; Sex Ratio, Water, Land rights, Health (MMR/IMR), literacy (Drop-outs), violence, Non recognition, invisibility etc.  Health  Literacy  Income generation; Livelihoods  Employment; Men, Women, Children

15 Continue  Eco-generation/Dairy/Nursery farming,  Housing,  Banking and saving services etc.  Negotiations/Facilitation,  Movements  Legal interventions  Advocacy for policy change
