Introduction to the Session Session Objective: To understand more about different sanitation marketing approaches being implemented in South Asia. Key Findings… Demographic information: Average family size - 4.7 persons (national average 4.4) Less than 1% of the total population identified as people living with disability Average age of respondents of the households was 46.7 years 47% population of the area had no schooling background The main occupation of head of the households was agricultural farming at around 27% followed by non-agricultural labourer at 13% and small business another 13% Average monthly income of households is BDT 13,854 (USD177) Average monthly expenditure of the households is BDT 10,980 (USD 140)

Key Findings… Sanitation related information: Around 60% of households were using unhygienic latrines and 3% practicing OD as well Around 59% of latrine users are not comfortable with the hardware materials used for constructing their latrine

Key Findings… Sanitation suppliers related information: Around 65% entrepreneurs are manufacturers-come-retailer About 46% sanitation business entrepreneurs found to have taken commercial loan from different nationalized and private banks The sanitation business entrepreneurs are interested for availing capacity building initiatives on sanitation business-related issues 50% had beyond 10 years of relevant business experience of dealings with marketing of different Water and Sanitation related supplies On average 82% entrepreneurs expressed their need for financial support from external agencies

HFHB’s Approach/Activities under SanMark Delivery Team (HFHB) Implementing the project: Conducted comprehensive study Arranged ToT and capacity building trainings for CBO & CWC members, sanitation suppliers and local labourers Provided grant to CBOs for sanitation loans Designed different types of toilets considering the affordability of community Facilitated CLTS triggering Awareness raising activities Monitoring Maintaining relations with Govt. and other service providers Red marked activities are not directly related with Sanitation Marketing study but done within WASH 3 project

HFHB’s Approach/Activities under SanMark Change agent Formed Community WaSH Committee (CWC) at the village level: Awareness raising in the community Demand creation CLTS triggering Monitoring ongoing hygiene promotion Providing training to the community people Maintaining relations with Govt. and other service providers Linking families with CBOs (for loans), and sanitation suppliers and local labourers (for latrine construction) Red marked activities are not directly related with Sanitation Marketing study but done within WASH 3 project

HFHB’s Approach/Activities under SanMark Change agent Community Based Organisations; Awareness raising in the community Supporting CWCs Providing sanitation loans (HFHB provided grant to CBOs and they revolving in the community) Providing soft loans to sanitation suppliers Collecting repayments and revolving the same Providing training to the community people Maintaining relations with Govt. and other service providers Linking families with CBOs (for loans), and sanitation suppliers and local labourers (for latrine construction) Red marked activities are not directly related with Sanitation Marketing study but done within WASH 3 project

HFHB’s Approach/Activities under SanMark Change agent Sanitation suppliers; Producing quality materials with the technical support from HFHB and financial support from CBOs Selling latrines/materials to loan recipients Referring skilled labourers to families Red marked activities are not directly related with Sanitation Marketing study but done within WASH 3 project

HFHB’s Approach/Activities under SanMark Change agent Local labourers; Constructing quality latrines for families Referring sanitation supplier for quality materials as well as CBOs for sanitation loans Red marked activities are not directly related with Sanitation Marketing study but done within WASH 3 project

Achievements… Formed 36 Community WASH Committees (CWCs) Conducted trainings for 36 CWCs on WASH, latrine maintenance and management Provided training to 9 CBOs on portfolio management, organisational management and risk management Provided training for 108 CWC members and 27 CBO members on Appropriate Construction Technology, Environmental Impact and Waste Management, and Quality Control of latrine construction Red marked activities are not directly related with Sanitation Marketing study but done within WASH 3 project

Achievements… Business development training for 36 Sanitation Suppliers Conducted training on latrine technical design for 36 Sanitation Suppliers Provided training on latrine construction, (including site selection, environmental impact, accessibility and quality control) for 300 local labourers and 96 youth apprentices Red marked activities are not directly related with Sanitation Marketing study but done within WASH 3 project

Achievements… Constructed 178 sanitary latrines through sanitation loan Red marked activities are not directly related with Sanitation Marketing study but done within WASH 3 project

Impact on the Community Community has access to sanitation loans Ensured availability of quality materials as well as trained labourers for latrine construction Local suppliers expanding their businesses A well developed market and demand chain in the community Suppliers are getting loans for business expansion which has now started revolving within the suppliers Women empowerment in CWC as 50% female members ensured

Challenges Motivating people for taking loans instead of grants Changing the traditional pattern of business among local suppliers Bringing behavioural change Navigating potential distorting impact of subsidies for poorest of the poor on loan uptake by others Please feel free to add few more challenges
