8th Grade Accelerated Language Arts Mrs. Lakeisha Corley Room 807

My Family My husband, Shane, and I have lived in the Madison area from 6 years. We have 4 children who attend Madison County Schools.

Curriculum We will be reading short stories and novels. We will be writing essays and book reports. We will be developing critical thinking skills and expanding our vocabulary. We will learn how to listen, speak and debate. We will learn how to give oral presentations and show our creativity.

Textbooks We have a class set of textbooks that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for 8th grade Language Arts. Your child will not bring home a language arts textbook.

We will have homework from time to time We will have homework from time to time. It might be a worksheet to complete based on skills we are covering for that week or an essay/writing assignment that needs to be completed outside of class. All homework assignments should be written in the student's planner before leaving class each day. Weekly vocabulary and independent reading will be required.

A 9 weeks grade will be given according to the following plan: Grading System A 9 weeks grade will be given according to the following plan: 66%-Major grades (chapter tests, research activities, projects, essays) 34%-Minor grades (homework, class work, notebook check, quizzes, Jag Marks) Please check grades in Active Parent. Grades will be updated weekly.

Organization = Success! Notebooks/Binders Organization = Success! I am encouraging your child to keep all Language Arts notes and worksheets in a binder with divider tabs. This will insure that all Language Arts materials stay together and are available to study and use in class. Please HELP and encourage your child to get organized and stay organized.

Jag Marks Students do these short activities (5-10 minutes) as soon as they walk into the room. This is a way to review the objectives we have covered or preview material that we will cover. A daily grade is taken for Jag Marks every two weeks.

Please call the school any time you wish to set up a conference. All conferences must be set up through the office with the 8th grade counselor, Mrs. Lindsey Montgomery. 601-605-4171.
