Common mistakes to avoid: IT’S: This is a contraction. It means “it is” or “it has” It’s really hot outside. It’s been a long time since I had to wear a sweater. ITS: This is the possessive pronoun. The dog barked at its neighbor.

More common mistakes to avoid: WHO’S: This is a contraction that means “who is” or who has”. Who’s that tall guy standing over there? Who’s gotten a good grade in this class? WHOSE: This is a possessive pronoun: Whose dog is that brown one? John is the guy whose dog is so mean.

Even more common mistakes to avoid: THERE : …is a place. Put your backpack over there. THEIR: …is a possessive plural pronoun. Their grandma is really old. THEY’RE: …is a contraction of “they are” They’re going to be in trouble if they don’t stop talking .

Journal Make a list of reasons why playing a game is appropriate in school. List as many reasons as you can think of.

Contraction Confusion? Are you still confused? Let’s quickly review the rules before we play a game. Who’s or Whose? “Who’s” is ONLY a contraction of WHO IS or WHO HAS. (Who’s going to McDonalds after school?) “Whose” is a possessive adjective. (Whose phone is ringing?) Its or It’s “It’s” is ONLY a contraction of IT IS or IT HAS. (It’s raining.) “Its” is actually the possessive form. (Its hair is all muddy.) Their, There, or They’re “Their” is a possessive adjective. (Their mom said she will drive us to the mall.) “There” is a place. (Their mom’s car is parked over there.) “They’re” is a contraction of they are. (They’re not happy because their mom’s car is parked way over there.)
