Who Are We? FTAANZ is the proposed organization that has been developed after several years of planning and working with leaders in the field of family therapy in New Zealand.

Background Information: The Werry Centre was funded by the Ministry of Health to explore the needs for family therapy in Aotearoa New Zealand and make recommendations regarding work force development. A Reference Group was initially developed with NZ leaders in Family Therapy to give input and help identify needs in the field.

A symposium for key stakeholders in family therapy to promote collaboration and learning opportunities Working with child and adolescent service management to develop role descriptions and career pathways to develop specialist family therapy roles Working with tertiary education providers to develop and promote family therapy courses at post graduate level supported by Skills Matter funding Development of a national family therapy Association. Development of a web‐based national clearinghouse to ensure a centralised and coordinated approach to the dissemination of research, training, and leadership information. Promotion of national training programmes in Family Therapy which recognise the unique cultural context in which family therapists working in New Zealand practice, ranging from short orientation courses to comprehensive training courses with a practicum component

• Promotion and provision of training in family engagement and family support strategies for all CAMH and AOD workers • Professional development of family therapy leaders including mentoring and supervision. • Further research of both appropriate indigenous models and applicability of “introduced” models to the New Zealand context.

Background Information (cont.) 2010 CAMHS conference in Nelson The Reference Group and the Werry Centre held an open forum to hear the needs of others around the country. At this forum, the reference group opened its membership to those in at the forum. The group double its membership to form the current reference group.
