The Crucible By Arthur Miller The Project

Introduction As you are aware, we have just completed reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller. We have had many classroom discussions throughout this reading. One particular classroom discussion we are going to take another look at is how we can apply The Crucible to our lives and society today. This project will take some creativity on your part and, I believe, fun. Shall we get started?

Video Project Options Scene from reality TV show using your peers in your group and produced by your group, A skit performed by your group,

Video Project Options A television talk show interview with one of the characters using present day situations (you can use “Oprah” or “Dr. Phil” for motivation), or A TV news report

Important Quote “I want to open myself! . . . I want the light of God, I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him, I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!”

Technology Requirements Your MacBook assigned to you at the beginning of the year. iMovie – app on MacBook. Speakers Projector Screen

Useful Materials The Crucible text – pick a scene from the story for the project Class notes (taken throughout this unit). www.sparknotes.com Handout with an example of a storyboard. Project rubric and instructions (handout provided at the beginning of class). Due Dates for each requirement (handout provided at the beginning of class).

Important quote “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!”

Group Participation I will assign the groups you will be working in. Everyone in each group is expected to participate. There is a participation grade with this project. Each member of the group will have a job to do. At the end of the project, there will be peer evaluations.

Project Requirements Group members’ job spreadsheet – this is where each group member will record their job assignment. Project Proposal Storyboard Video Final presentation

Important Quote “You must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between. This is a sharp time, now, a precise time—we live no longer in the dusky afternoon when evil mixed itself with good and befuddled the world. Now, by God’s grace, the shining sun is up, and them that fear not light will surely praise it.”

Important Due Dates Group Members’ job spreadsheet – Due April 10, 2012 Project Proposal – Due April 12, 2012 Storyboard – Due April 16, 2012 Video – Due April 19 & 20, 2012 Final Presentation – Due April 19 & 20, 2012

Three Strike Policy Student is not participating in their group = strike 1 If caught again not participating in their group = strike 2 Not participating in their group and being disruptive = strike 3 Student gets three strikes, they have to work on the project alone. Project is worth one test grade.

Important quote “A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now. I beg you, sir, I beg you—see her what she is. . . . She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whore’s vengeance. . . .”

Requirements Participant is on task 90-100% of the time. Contributes to the group and doesn’t distract from the mission. Project creatively interprets the quote and maximizes on participants’ talents. Captures audience attention. Completely fulfills or exceeds vision stated in proposal. All members clearly contribute.

Requirements (con’t) Project handles the quote masterfully and enhances audience’s understanding of the play. Flawless mechanics in oral/written language. Informal language use is purposeful, i.e. in dialogue.

Important quote “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”

Weight of Each Item to be Submitted Group Members’ job spreadsheet – Daily Grade Project Proposal – Daily Grade Storyboard – Daily Grade Video – Test Grade Final Presentation – Test Grade

Conclusion In conclusion, I hope you find this project fun and gets your mind running. I know you are all very creative and will present great outcomes in this project. At this time, I will take any questions regarding this project and The Crucible.
