1 The Nature of Hope Romans 8:24-25

2 Hope is the expectation of something desired.
Desire + Expectation = Hope Hope is always oriented toward the future.

3 24 For in this hope we were saved. But
24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. (Ro 8:24-25)

4 1 Now faith is being sure of what we
1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Heb 11:1)

5 It is waiting with: Joy: like Stephen... 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. (Rom 12:12)

6 Confidence: like Moses...
17 The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. (Isa 32:17)

7 Patience: like Job... 11 As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. (James 5:11)

8 Discipline: like the early Christians...
13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. (1 Peter 1:13)

9 Like Daniel facing Darius’ edict ...
9 So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. (2 Cor. 5:9)

10 Hope is closely related to other important biblical ideas:
Forgiveness of sins. 3 If you, O LORD , kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. 5 I wait for the LORD , my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. (Psa 130:3-5)

11 Confidence, trust 5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. (Psa 43:5)

12 Optimism, buoyancy 19 Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. (Phil 1:19)

13 Faith and love 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Cor 1:13)

14 18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” (Rom 4:18)

15 Hope is securely and objectively grounded on:
God’s character (Titus 1:2) 2 a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time (Titus 1:2)

16 Christ’s resurrection (Rom. 8:11)
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. (Rom 8:11)

17 The Scriptures (Rom. 15:4) 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (Rom 15:4)

18  Hope will grow in intensity, but it never, even at first, need be tentative or uncertain
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:13)
