Ms. Edwards English III

2 What we will be doing We will be reading the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Also we will discuss our author Arthur Miller and the real history of the trials. Two exams, each covering two acts and some notes. There will be a final project to go along with this Once we are finished we will watch the 1996 version of the Crucible.

3 The Play The Crucible is a dramatization of the events that took place during the Salem Witch Trials in The story follows the people of Salem as the hysteria of witches takes over the town and claims many innocent lives. The Crucible is not an accurate representation of the events that took place during the trails. Some of the name of the characters in the play are based off of real people. However Miller changed some events to fit the play.

4 The Author Arthur Miller wrote this play back in 1952.
He used the back drop of the Witch trials to represent a type of Witch hunt happening in the 50s. The Gov’t were looking for people working with the Communist Party. Miller was one of many who were accused of being a Communist.

5 The History The Salem witch trials took place in 1692 and ended in 1693. The Reverend’s daughter and a few other children starting having fits (threw things, and made strange sounds). They accused three women of casting spells on them. More than 200 people were accused of witchcraft however only 20 were executed. Fourteen women and five men were executed by hanging. One man was crushed to death.

Week 3: Act 4, Notes over History and Discuss projects Week 4: Exam, start working on projects and movie.

8 Final Project Option 1- Group video project: Do an interpretation of one of the scenes. Option 2- Research Paper: Research a particular event or a person involved in the trials. Option 3- Soundtrack- Choose music that you think goes with a scene, or a person. A mix tape of someone’s life.
