Normandy, France

What do you know about Normandy? 1. Where is Normandy? Normandy is a region in North Western France, Europe. 2. What is Normandy famous for? Tourist attractions: The Normandy Beaches: the site of the D-Day Landings in World War 2. Mount St. Michel: the world famous mediaeval abbey built on a rock in the bay - One of France's most visited historic monuments. Historical event: The Normandy landings

Mount St. Michel: Apart from monuments in and around Paris, Mont Saint Michel is the most visited tourist attraction in France. This remarkable mediaeval walled city, crowned by its great gothic abbey. Le Mont Saint Michel is not just a church on a rock; it is a whole mediaeval city, one of the few places in France to have preserved intact its mediaeval walls and defenses. The Abbey that most visitors climb up to see is a fine example of mediaeval architecture, different parts dating from different periods as is common in old cathedrals and abbeys.

On "D-Day" in June 1944, Allied forces disembarked on the Normandy beaches, in a massive surprise attack that was to mark the beginning of the end of the Second World War. Thousands of Allied troops – Americans, British, French, Canadians and others, gave their lives in the battles to recapture Normandy and achieve victory over the Nazis. The Normandy beaches and the area inland are today the site of many memorials and museums in memory of those who fought through and those who died during this momentous period of history.
