2.  The battle of Dunkirk took place in Dunkirk, France on the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk.  Dunkirk lasted from May 26- June 4, 1940.

4.  The Battle of Dunkirk was the defense and evacuation of British and allied forces in Europe.  The operation became necessary when large numbers of British, French, and Belgian troops were cut off and surrounded by the German Army during the Battle of France in the Second World War.

5.  Resulted in the capture of France by Germany, also marked the start of the second world war for western Europe.  Without the evacuation at Dunkirk the result may have been the capture of thousands of British, French and Belgium troops that were being surrounded by the German Army.

6.  Allies were able to retrieve huge percentage of their forces.  Wouldn't have been able to return to England, rest up and return to Normandy (D-Day Tactics  The evacuation (Operation Dynamo) was to be carried out by a fleet of destroyers and merchant ships.  It was hoped that 45,000 men could be rescued over two days.  Operation Dynamo rescued 7,669 men on the first day and 17,804 on the second.
