Does my student have accommodations? ESL Lynn Moretti, ESL Teacher Lynn.moretti@allenisd.org Welcome My name is Lynn Moretti, and I am the ESL teacher at Kerr Elementary School. I love working with students who are learning English. I have been teaching at Kerr since 2002. There is no other place I would rather be! I see ESL students according to grade level and English level. This time can last from 30-45 minutes a session. During this time, we work on developing oral communication skills, vocabulary, and reading and writing skills. Please let me know if you have any questions! Adult ESL Classes On my website, I have placed a list of adult ESL classes that are available in this area. Please feel free to share this information with anyone you may know who might be interested in learning English. Does my student have accommodations? Yes! Accommodations for ESL students are decided upon by the ESL teacher, classroom teachers and then approved by the LPAC committee. As a student progresses in the English language, the number of accommodations will decrease. These accommodations are based on language needs only. How do I know if my child is progressing in the English language? Each spring, all ESL students in the state of Texas participate in the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System, or TELPAS. By using this assessment system, we are able to see the progress that ESL students make in learning the English language from year to year. The students’ use of English is rated in the four following categories: •Listening •Speaking •Reading •Writing The students will receive one of the following ratings for each category listed above: •Beginning •Intermediate •Advanced •Advanced High How long will it take my child to learn English? Studies show that it takes a student anywhere from three to five years to become fluent in the English language, although some may take more or less time. It depends on each student’s individual situation. Mrs. Moretti’s Contact Information Email: Lynn.moretti@allenisd.org Phone: 972-236-0600, ext. 8591
