W.I.S.E. WEEE Green Environmental Technology

01 02 03 04 CONTENT WHY ? WHAT IS W.I.S.E ? W.I.S.E W.E.E.E INTRO 01 02 03 04 WHY ? WHAT IS W.I.S.E ? W.I.S.E W.E.E.E THEN WHAT ? 2/18

INTRO “ WHEN THE LAST TREE IS CUT DOWN, THE LAST RIVER POISENED, THE LAST FISH CAUGHT, THEN ONLY THE WHITE MAN WILL DISCOVER THAT HE CANNOT EAT MONEY. - CHIEF SEATTLE ” 3/18

INTRO Ateliere Fara Frontiere is a romanian Non Profit Organisation aiming to create green jobs - waste recycling and refurbishing- for disadvantaged people, and prepare them for social and professional integration on the labour market The SINTEF Group is the largest independent contract research organization in Scandinavia with more than 2000 employees. SINTEF Materials and Chemistry - a research division within the SINTEF Group - is heavily involved in, and puts strategic emphasis on sustainable recycling and recovery of waste. 4/18

5/18

01. WHY? POPULATION IS GROWING EXPONENTIALLY 6/18

01. WHY? SO DOES THE DEMAND FOR RAW MATERIALS 7/18

12% 01. WHY? TREMENDOUS IMPACT OF WASTE ON THE ENVIRONMENT ANNUAL COST The methane generated by landfilling represents 12% of greenhouse gas 12% ANNUAL COST Global anual cost of the 1,3 billion tons of waste generated every year : $205 BN (UNEP, 2012) 8/18

01. WHY? FROM MINING TO LANDFILLING – NOT WISE 9/18

02. WHAT IS WISE ? 10/18

02. WHAT IS W.I.S.E ? a Work Integration Social Enterprise is making efforts to deliver economic performance in order to efficiently and sustainably address challenges that neither the state, nor the private sector can solve by themselves 11/18

03. W.I.S.E W.E.E.E a pilot project save valuable resources protect the environment provide new positive jobs to vulnerable people increase local added value close the loop in Europe 12/18

03. W.I.S.E W.E.E.E Results: 1 report on retrieval of targeted elements after chemical analysis 1 new fully equipped work station 2 new procedures to recover critical raw materials 4 green jobs created for vulnerable people 1 training of the AFF employees by SINTEF experts on process & HSE 13/18

03. W.I.S.E W.E.E.E Tantalum capacitors from PCBs: completely lost during recycling through refining process $160 per kg: can increase AFF’s revenue and make it possible to increase the labour force. Magnets from HDD: Rare earth elements consist about 23-30% important secondary source of raw materials for neodymium 14/18

03. W.I.S.E W.E.E.E Do it manually: to recover critical metals to increase the quality of the aluminium, stainless steel, PCB scraps… But do it right: using precise tools and ergonomic equipment to perform the work according to HSE guidelines improving employability of people in great difficulty 15/18

16/18

04. THEN WHAT ? good basis for further cooperation beyond the actual pilot phase sector-wide initiatives, cooperation with other European companies to contribute to further development of environmentally friendly technologies for a virtuous circular economy flow in Europe 17/18
