Supplemental Math Digital Tool: Dreambox Presented by: Ivan Flores Thomas Suttle

Agenda Introduction to Teacher dashboard Resources “vision of Instructional Technology” Digital Tool: Dreambox MAth Teacher dashboard Dashboard reports Classroom settings Resources Teacher Hub Open work time to review data Questions??

Objectives I will login to Dreambox and Navigate the teacher dashboard I will be introduced to: Vision of instructional technology Digital Tool Overview: Dreambox I will reflect on my current use of Digital Tools in my classroom

Vision for instructional Technology We believe using technology intentionally and innovatively will lead to greater equity and achievement for all students by… increasing opportunities and access creating authentic learning environments enhancing collaboration and productivity providing differentiated and personalized learning providing students opportunities to develop and demonstrate critical thinking skills

Best practices for digital tools identifying target students ideal implementation models Lab rotation Model Rotation model while teacher pulls small groups Student use before/after school at Home how the tool integrates with existing instructional practices

Implementation of Digital tools Provide Supports and Foster Independence: Use notebooks or other supports for students to record their levels and progress, to write out solutions to problems, to record their learning. Encourage students to help classmates (either technically or academically). Ask Supporting Questions: When students struggle or need support with a tool, ask open-ended questions that help them find their own solutions. Ask questions like, “What are you trying to do?” “How could you figure that out?” What problem are you trying to solve?” “What have you figured out so far?” “What are some options for what you could try next?”

Implementation of Digital tools cont. Ensure Meaningful and Important Work in Tools: Set a clear purpose for why and how students are using a tool. Relay the importance of their effort and accuracy when taking assessment pieces and their intentionality when practicing skills. Track and Celebrate Progress: Post progress charts in classrooms with specific success indicators (i.e. syllabus progress percentage or quiz score data) and celebrate student growth. Empower students to track their own progress by placing marks on the chart or in their notes.

Implementation of Digital tools cont. Intervene Based on Data: Set a regular schedule to analyze data from tools. Identify students who need intensive intervention and pull groups of students with similar struggles for targeted instruction and supported practice. Connect Online to Offline Instruction: Make connections between work in tools to classroom instruction with explicit ties or with general ideas.

Digital Tool : Dreambox Ensure Meaningful and Important Work in Tools: Set a clear purpose for why and how students are using a tool. Relay the importance of their effort and accuracy when taking assessment pieces and their intentionality when practicing skills. Track and Celebrate Progress: Post progress charts in classrooms with specific success indicators (i.e. # of lessons per week, growth in a particular strand) and celebrate student growth. Empower students to track their own progress by placing marks on the chart or in their notes. Intervene Based on Data: Set a regular schedule to analyze data from tools. Identify students who need intensive intervention and pull groups of students with similar struggles for targeted instruction and supported practice.

Learning Needs addressed by Dreambox Reinforces core math concepts in a visual and conceptual manner along with modeling and reinforcing mathematically efficient strategies Adaptive and individualized based on gaps students have in math Aligned to the CCSS Content standard and mathematical practices

Targeted students Tier 2 students needing intervention in math Can provide enrichment for students as well

Recommended usage About 5-8 lessons completed by students per week. Can be completed in class, at home, or a combination of both Each session in Dreambox should last 20-45 minutes students will be able to complete 2-3 lessons per session Students want to dedicate this time to be focused Students using Dreambox must work a minimum of 15 minutes a week to record data. Any usage less than 15 minutes a week will often show as no usage.

Suggested implementation models Lab rotation model (traditional computer Lab/COW Cart model) Students access Dreambox and complete a lesson or 2 then move to another digital tool. This Can be Teacher directed or student directed to rotate between choices of tools provided by the teacher. Rotation Model Teacher pulls small groups for focused instruction while part of the class uses digital tools independently Students Accessing dreambox outside of the school day

Prior to Day One Login to Clever and Dreambox to check your class roster Assign students to the correct instructional level prior to initial use Think about scheduling and managing computers/laptops How often will I use them? What day/time do I have them checked out? Determine your expectations for example: How many lessons per week? Which students need access? How often will students use Dreambox at School and at Home? Print take home letters from Dreambox

Day one Teach and post expectations for using computers Pass out Usernames and Passwords to students Login to district computer, select Dreambox icon and have them login to Clever Select Application Dreambox Teach students how to exit Dreambox and Clever so they don't lose their work.

Day Two and beyond Check to make sure student information is accurate and students can login Make sure each student only appears once on the roster Monitor students' as they work Monitor classroom progress reports

Student math Journal/Notebook Helps students to stay focused and on-task Creates a record of students' progress Addresses many of the Habits of Mind and/or Mathematical Practices in the CCSS Habits of Mind

Reports Classroom Overview should be checked at least once a week to monitor lesson completion. Teachers may also get a quick glance at individual growth and grade level proficiency. Change timeline to “Last 7 days” for weekly data review

Reports cont. Classroom Activity shows real time information on lessons that the students have worked on and includes the CCSS #. Teachers have the opportunity to play sample lessons that demonstrate the targeted skills in that lesson group. A good use of this is to have students demonstrate proficiency after they have completed a lesson group.

Reports cont. Classroom Standards Proficiency helps teachers see where students are working to help plan instruction. They may look at previous grade levels for intervention, or their current grade level to differentiate core instruction.

Reports cont. Student Overview gives teachers an overview of a student’s progress and proficiency by grade level. Teachers can see the individual lessons the student has worked and Lesson Groups completed.

Reports cont. Student Standards allows teachers the ability to track growth, from as broad as a grade level, down to an individual CCSS.

Reports Cont. Student Usage shows teachers how many lessons completed and time spent for a given time period. Teachers are also able to monitor how much DreamBox is being used outside of school.
