Traditional Literature

What is Traditional Literature? Traditional literature includes stories that have been told and re-told for many years, and consequently, becomes stories that almost everyone knows.

Types of Traditional Literature Myth: A myth is a story that usually explains something about the world and involves gods and other superhuman beings. Examples include: Medusa’s Head, Prometheus Bringer of Fire, Iliad & Odyssey Folk Tale: A folk tale is a story with no known author that usually teaches a lesson. Examples of American folktales include: Brer Rabbit, Paul Bunyan, Three Billy Goats Gruff, etc. Legend: A legend is a story often believed to be true and in which the characters are usually considered historical by some. Examples include: Robin Hood, King Arthur, and Pecos Bill. Fable: Fables are stories intended to teach a lesson, and animals often speak and act like human beings. Examples include: The Tortoise and the Hare and The Lion and the Mouse. Fairy Tales: Fairy tales involve ordinary people who haveexperiences of a supernatural kind and are affected by charms, disguises, spells, or other fantastic occurrences. Examples include: Snow White and Cinderella.
