What is Finance? Finance is a broad field with a range of opportunities for those who want to help people and companies succeed financially. Financial workers stay abreast of economic developments, tracking and predicting changes in order to increase efficiency and profit.

What does a Finance professional actually do? Finance professionals may: Prepare financial statements Study and forecast economic trends Monitor financial details to make sure legal requirements are met Review company reports and suggest efficiencies Analyze market trends to improve profit Advise management on financial decisions Research and recommend investments

Finance Majors (usually…) Are: Technology savvy Persuasive Goal-oriented Highly organized Have: Strong math skills Attention to detail Strong people skills A desire to collaborate Negotiation skills

Primary Career Paths in Finance Personal Finance: Where decisions are made about paying for education, financing goods such as real estate and vehicles, buying health and property insurance, and investing and saving for retirement. Corporate Finance: Providing the funds for a business' activities, which can include balancing risk and profitability, studying and forecasting economic trends, reviewing company reports and suggesting efficiencies, working to maximize stock value, managing funds, choosing a portfolio of investments, and applying principles of financial risk management Public Finance: The financial dealings of states, as well as related public entities such as school districts or government agencies. Some typical arenas for working in public finance include in actuary (insurance), corporate finance or real estate, financial planning, investment banking and money management.

Job Outlook for Finance Professionals Employment of financial analysts is projected to grow 16% from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. A growing range of financial products and the need for in-depth knowledge of geographic regions are expected to lead to strong employment growth. Employment of financial examiners is projected to grow 6% percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations. New regulations will likely create a need for more examiners, though declining employment in federal government will slow growth for these workers. Student Organizations Undergraduate Finance Association (UFA) The Undergraduate Finance Association is a student-led organization founded with the mission to provide any student interested in finance the opportunity to learn and prepare for a career in the financial industry. Buckeye Capital Investors Buckeye Capital Investors is the foremost investment club at Ohio State and was originally founded in 2005. The mission of Buckeye Capital Investors is to educate members on the financial markets and how to actively invest and manage a portfolio. Common Cents Investment Group We discuss investments of all types but particularly stocks.
