How far do you agree with this interpretation? Women in the USA in the 1920s Exam Question One interpretation is that women had more freedom in America in the 1920s. How far do you agree with this interpretation? 10 marks

You should refer to the content of all three sources and your OK. Layer 1 What do you think this question is asking you to do? Layer 2 Exam board will give you 3 sources that reflect different interpretations. You should refer to the content of all three sources and your OK. Layer 3 Why the interpretation has been made based on the sources that have been used. You need to consider the attributions/provenance of sources A and B (you don’t need to evaluate C)

How far do you agree with this interpretation? Exam Question One interpretation is that women had more freedom in America in the 1920s. How far do you agree with this interpretation? Source A From a GCSE textbook printed in 2013 Women wore more daring clothes. They smoked in public and drank with men in public. They went out with men, in cars… There were 10 million women in jobs in 1929, 24% more than in 1920. With money of their own, working women became the particular target of advertising. Source C Women from the 1920s, two flappers on motor cycles Source B from America as Americans see it, by the feminist American writer Doris E Fleischman, 1932 On the whole these middle class women do their own housework with few of the mechanical aids. Women who live on farms do a great deal of work besides caring for their children, washing the clothes and caring for the home and cooking. Thousands still work in the fields and help milk the cows.

In this question you will be given 3 sources to use. Read each source and make sure you understand what it is saying and suggesting. Does it support the interpretation in the question? If yes then how does it do this and if no then how does it challenge or disagree with the interpretation? Study each source on the next 3 slides and discuss with your partner.

One interpretation is that women had more freedom in America in the 1920s. How far do you agree with this interpretation? Source B from America as Americans see it, by the feminist American writer Doris E Fleischman, 1932 On the whole these middle class women do their own housework with few of the mechanical aids. One interpretation is that women had more freedom in America in the 1920s. How far do you agree with this interpretation? Source C Women from the 1920s, two flappers on motor cycles

Email from examiner I would recommend using all three sources i.e. refer directly to them. The third source should be used to support either evidence 1 or 2. Candidates should refer to content and attributions in relation to evidence 1 and 2. They should attempt to explain why the interpretation has been formed. At the end of the response the candidate should say whether or not they agree with the given interpretation based on their discussion of the evidence. We would be keen to move away from a straightforward source evaluation approach to the question but in commenting on why the interpretation has been formed references to things like bias will be credited.

Structure options: Note that this is not a source evaluation! A 4 paragraph response to this question on women. Agree with interpretation using source A and OK. In this example would also use source C Disagree using Source B and OK Explain why the interpretations have come about by referring to the provenance/attributions of sources A and B Try to link your evaluation of the source to why it has the view it does. Try to avoid saying it’s reliable. Instead say that the source would have this view because it was written by… Conclusion by referring to the sources or putting the interpretation into context (this was generally well done) Alternatively you could consider why the interpretation has come about in your agree and disagree paragraphs

Mark scheme LEVEL 1 Generalised answer; makes simple comments about the interpretation; will copy or paraphrase the given evidence. [1-2] LEVEL 2 Identifies differences between ways in which the issue has been interpreted; will offer a basic judgement with some support from evidence and own knowledge of the issue [3-5] LEVEL 3 Begins to recognise and comment on how and why this issue has been interpreted in different ways; will give a judgement on the value of the given interpretation. [6-8] LEVEL 4 Recognises and provides reasoned comments on how and why this issue has been interpreted in different ways; will give a clear judgement on the value of the given interpretation in the historical context. [9-10]

Peer-mark: Write down by the side of your partner’s work Inferred from A O.K. to support A Inferred from B O.K. to support B Used C to support either A or B Explained why A & B are different using provenance Explained why A & B are different using context Conclusion, showing which interpretation you agree with and why (referring to the sources) SIR and Grade earned (out of 10 marks)

Note – on the VLE for Unit 2 Lesson 1-2 on women there is a sample response titled: “Sample response to interpretation question on women in the 1920s”
