Becoming Certified State Vs. National Requirements There is no federal standard for training and competency The State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy does not require licensure to become a certified pharmacy technician *In 2020 certification candidates will be required to attend an accredited pharmacy technician training program in order to sit for the national examination. Two national examinations are available PTCE (Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam) ExCPT (Examination for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) The accreditation process has been currently halted while ASHP reviews standards.

Why Should You Consider Certification The CPhT designation: signifies an individual’s competence as a technician, and indicates a high level of knowledge and skill. Mark of achievement that employers, colleagues, and others will recognize. You may earn more, and may cost your employer less time and money in training you. Some employers may pay or reimburse the employee for the cost to take a certification exam (if successfully completed), and/or provide training assistance for a certification exam.

Why Should You Consider Certification According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 32% from 2010 to 2020.

Higher pay rates may be given due to: As with any job, it depends on where you work but your beginning pay may range from $8.00 to $14.00 per hour in Central Ohio area. Higher pay rates may be given due to: shift differentials (i.e. working evenings or weekends) becoming a Certified Technician
