What’s the difference?

2 Technicians Licensed technical support for veterinarians, biomedical researchers, and other scientists Through the 1950’s, vets trained their own employees. They were referred to as assistants. Formal academic programs appeared in the 1960’s. Today, there are over 80 vet. technology programs in the U.S. All programs are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Programs are typically 2-4 years.

3 Clinical Skills of a Licensed Vet. Technician include:
Physical exam and patient history Client education Care for hospitalized animals Administration of vaccines and medications Laboratory procedures Dental prophylaxis Radiology Anesthesiology Surgical assistance Hospital management Labeling and dispensing prescriptions

4 Vet. Technicians In about 40 states, vet technicians are certified, registered, or licensed. Candidates are tested for competency through an examination which may include oral, written, and/or practical portions. This process is regulated by a State Board of Veterinary Examiners.

5 Veterinary Assistants
Unlicensed individuals whose duties include: Care for basic animal needs under the direction of the vet or vet technician Administer and monitor the use of common physical restraints Assist the vet tech during surgery Assist the vet tech with radiographs Collect samples for diagnostic laboratory work Perform common laboratory tests under the supervision of the vet tech Perform basic bookkeeping functions Prepare labels for medication Schedule appointments Perform receptionist duties

Find 5 programs total Select 1 of those 5 programs and locate the qualifications for being accepted, length of program, costs, requirements for graduation (i.e. internships?), and any other details about the program. Submit this paper at the end of class once you are complete.
