Luke: An Eyewitness Account August 3, 2016 Wednesday Bible Study

Luke 20:9-26 NKJV

After Jesus had responded to the chief priests and scribes concerning His _________(1) (20:1-8), He took the ______(2) to the religious leaders with the following parable. authority fight

Luke 20:9-16 NKJV 9 Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time.

10 Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty- handed.

11 Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

12 And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’

14 But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’

15 So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

16 He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.” And when they heard it they said, “Certainly not!”

In this parable, the Father is represented by the _______(3) of a vineyard. The vinedressers are the chief religious _______(4) and ______(5) He left in charge of the land of Israel. owner leaders kings

The servants sent by the owner are the prophets God sent into Israel. Jesus represents the ____________(6) (20:13). Beloved Son

The vinedressers abused the servants but they chose to kill the beloved Son. Their thoughts were that they would claim control of the vineyard.

Jesus hints that the responsibility of caring for the kingdom will be taken from the Jews to another group of people. This is a prophetic reference to the _______(7) (20:16). church

Their response to the outcome of the parable was “certainly not!” (20:10) They could not imagine, no matter how horribly they had treated the prophets, that God would ever give His ________(8) to others. blessing

Luke 20:17-19 NKJV 17 Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone’?

18 Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

19 And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people —for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

Jesus reaches back into the Old Testament to show them God had _______(9) known how His Son would be treated (Psalm 118:22). always

The word picture was one people who lived in that place at that time would have understood. Today, cornerstones are primarily symbolic.

However, in 1 st Century Israel, cornerstones were chosen for their attributes that would give them the strength to support the _________(10) of stone buildings. integrity

God would supply them Jesus upon Whom the integrity of the Kingdom could be established. However, they had ________(11) Him. rejected

This is the principle behind Peter’s confession of faith in Matthew 16. Matthew 16:18 NKJV And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on This rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

This “rock” is the ____________(12) of the Kingdom which is Jesus the Son of God. cornerstone

The meaning of verse 18 is uncertain. Some have interpreted those who break because they stumble on Jesus means they are broken and saved.

I don’t share this view. According to verse 19, the parable is spoken strictly against the chief priests and scribes.

I believe Jesus is teaching that judgment will be ________(13) against those who directly oppose and reject Him (grind); those who simply trip over Him will be _______(14). harsher broken

Luke 20:20-26 NKJV 20 So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the power and the authority of the governor.

21 Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth: 22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23 But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test Me? 24 Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They answered and said, “Caesar’s.”

25 And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

26 But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

The battle was full on now. As in most wars, the enemy deployed ______________(15). double agents

These deceivers pretended to be followers of Christ for the purpose of “delivering Him to the power and authority of the governor” (20:20).

Note that they were unable to trip Him up with religious _________(16). So now, they were trying to trap Him into saying something that would put Him at odds with ______(17). doctrine Rome

If they could claim that He counseled His followers to ________(18) paying taxes, then this would be a ________(19) offense. neglect criminal

He knew that their purpose was to test Him (20:23). Jesus carried no money on His person. That was the task of ______(20). Judas

By showing that it was Caesar’s image on the coin, Jesus was teaching truth both directly and _________(21). indirectly

It was Caesar they owed because it was the ruler’s image on the coin. I believe another question was implied: “Whose image do you bear?”

They would know that Moses declared we are made in God’s ______(22) (Genesis 1:26). Thus, because we bear His image, He is also due our __________(23). image allegiance

Once again, the people who heard Jesus speak “marveled” at His words. Knowing that Jesus could not be tricked, His enemies kept ______(24). silent

These double agents learned what we all should know: you cannot keep _______(25) from the One who know the contents of your_______(26). secrets heart
