Ambition – Respect - Excellence Ardrossan Academy Dead Earth Subtopic – Climate change

Ambition – Respect - Excellence Lesson Title: What is climate change? Learning Intention: Learn about the effect of some life processes on the composition of the atmosphere Learn about increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere Activity: I will be successful if I can : Carry out the investigation on global warming Describe what global warming is and how it is caused

Ambition – Respect - Excellence Starter 1.Name the gas which turns limewater cloudy. 2.Which gas relights a glowing taper? 3.Which gas is most abundant in the Earth’s atmosphere?

Ambition – Respect - Excellence Climate change Climate change represents a change in long-term weather patterns. Earth has warmed up over the past 100 years. ng-resource/Teachers-TV-- Climate-Change--The- Causes

Ambition – Respect - Excellence Why is Earth getting warmer? The Greenhouse Effect Greenhouse gases make the Earth warmer by trapping energy in the atmosphere.

Ambition – Respect - Excellence What are Greenhouse Gases? water vapour occurs naturally in the atmosphere. carbon dioxide produced naturally when animals breathe. methane comes from cattle as they digest their food. nitrous oxide when plants die and rot, nitrous oxide is produced. ozone occurs naturally in the atmosphere.

Ambition – Respect - Excellence

How do we contribute to the Greenhouse Effect?

Ambition – Respect - Excellence 1.Burning fossil fuels - coal, oil and natural gas - releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere..

Ambition – Respect - Excellence 2.A group of gases called CFCs, have been used in aerosols, fridges and in making foam plastics. They are found in small amounts in the atmosphere. They are dangerous because small amounts can trap large amounts of heat.

Ambition – Respect - Excellence Global Warming The more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the more heat is trapped. This makes the Earth warmer. This is known as GLOBAL WARMING.

Ambition – Respect - Excellence Does carbon dioxide really contribute to Global Warming? You are going to investigate whether there is a link between carbon dioxide and a rise in temperature. Now collect your investigation guidelines from your teacher (in resource folder)

Ambition – Respect - Excellence Method: 1.Put an empty beaker in a polyethene bag. 2.Carefully fill the beaker with hot water and put a thermometer into the water. 3.Place a bag around the beaker and tie it tightly around the thermometer. 4.Take the thermometer out of the water every minute. 5.Put your results in a table. 6.Do the same again, this time fill the polyethene bag with carbon dioxide (blow into the bag). 7.Enter your results in the table provided.
