4 The natural and the enhanced greenhouse effect
The natural and the enhanced greenhouse effect. We have already looked at the natural greenhouse effect – the effect of having small amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which allow life on Earth to exist because they trap heat and keep us warm. However, if these gases increase in the atmosphere, they can cause global temperatures to increase. The enhanced greenhouse effect is caused when human activities release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere – greenhouse gases can remain in the atmosphere for many years

5 Human causes of climate change
Most scientists agree that before the Industrial Revolution people did not affect the climate. Any changes to the climate before 200 years ago have to be explained by natural causes. However, since then, we know that human activities have released a lot of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, chiefly carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons. In the last 100 years, global temperatures have increased by nearly 10C. Climatologists also predict that by 2100, temperatures could rise by another 1-60C if greenhouse gases are not reduced.

7 Increased Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
The burning of fossil fuels such as coal has resulted in huge amounts of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Before we had electricity, coal was very important as it was used to power factories and trains and to warm our homes – although the use of coal in the developed world is less common now, fossil fuels are still burned in power stations to produce electricity. There are more vehicles on the roads today than ever – over 1 billion in most vehicles run on petrol (a fossil fuel). When burned, releases CO2. Deforestation is an increasing problem across the world. Destroying large areas of forest means more CO2 in the atmosphere.

8 Increased methane (CH4)
Increased methane (CH4). Each year 200 million tonnes of methane is released into the atmosphere. Most of the increase in methane comes from padi fields, which alone contribute about 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Rice absorbs carbon from the atmosphere; however, if the plant is not able to use the carbon it is dispersed into the soil where it converts to methane – it is then released into the atmosphere. Animal dung and belching cows. 1.5 billion cows, each releasing about 100kg of methane each year. Landfill sites – as the waste begins to decompose it produces methane, which then goes into the atmosphere.

9 Increased nitrous oxide (N20)
Increased nitrous oxide (N20). Nitrous oxide is times more effective in trapping heat than carbon dioxide and it has one of the longest atmosphere lifetimes of all the greenhouse gasses – lasting for up to 120 years. Since the Industrial Revolution, the level of N2O in the atmosphere has increased by 16%. N2O is released when people add nitrogen to the soil by using fertilisers. Soils release over half of the N2O in the atmosphere – two to four million tonnes per year. Vehicles are also a major contributor to increased levels of N2O, as it is released when petrol and diesel are burned.

10 Increased chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
CFCs are chemical compounds that were developed in the 1930s for use in refrigeration and aerosols. They are also used for air-conditioning systems and polystyrene packaging. The use of CFCs has been linked to the reduction of the ozone layer but the compounds found in CFCs are also greenhouse gases which can be more harmful than carbon dioxide.
