1 Carbon Footprint Created by: Mrs. Dube

2 What is a Carbon Footprint?
A measure of the greenhouse gases that individuals or groups emit into the atmosphere Carbon footprint is measured in tons of carbon dioxide emitted What is a Carbon Footprint?

3 What are Greenhouse Gases?
There are six main greenhouse gases: Carbon dioxide, also known by its chemical formula CO2 Methane, also known by its chemical formula CH4 Nitrous oxide, also known by its chemical formula N2 O Troposheric Ozone, its chemical formula is O3 CFC-12 whose chemical formula is CCL2F2 HCFC -22 with CCl2F2 as its chemical formula What are Greenhouse Gases?

4 Source of Greenhouse Gases
Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) – found in fossil-fuel combustion, land-use conversion, cement production Methane – found in fossil fuels, rice paddies, waste dumps Nitrous oxide – found in fertilizer, industrial processes, and combustion Source of Greenhouse Gases

5 Sources of Greenhouse Gases
CFC- 12 – found in liquid coolants and foams HCFC -22 – found in refrigerants Tropospheric ozone – found in fossil fuel combustion, industrial emissions, and chemical solvents Sources of Greenhouse Gases

6 Fossil fuels - are hydrocarbons (chemicals made up of carbon and hydrogen) such as coal, oil and natural gas, that come from the organic remains of prehistoric organisms Energy released can be harnessed to produce electricity, power vehicles, heat homes, cook food and much more. Also used in the production of important materials such as plastics What are Fossil Fuels?

7 Why Do We Care About Carbon Footprint?
Climate Change Global Warming Drought Floods Melting Ice Caps Threatening Animal Habitats Why Do We Care About Carbon Footprint?

8 How Do You Think Animal Habitats are Threatened?

10 Climate change – refers to the variation in the earth’s temperature
Rise in the average surface temperature Caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide Climate Change

16 Assessing Your Carbon Footprint

17 List ideas that you, as students, can do to reduce yours and your family’s carbon footprint.
