What’s similar?  Thorough needs analysis  Clear course outline  Find our about learner styles/preferences  Manage expectations  Channels of communication Aims → ILOs → process incl. tasks & activities → form of assessment → feedback

Use of Technology  Levels of literacy (Ts and Ss)  Online = platform for instruction  F2F = teaching aid  Is there a back-up? Synchronous → Asynchronous Technology → whiteboard

Classroom / Chatroom Management  Building rapport with and among ss  Building and sustaining feeling of online community  Dealing with issues? Real time v delayed  Monitoring  Giving FB  Summaries/weaves

Attrition  “Attrition rates for classes taught through distance education are 10 – 20% higher than classes taught in a face-to-face setting” (Williams et al 2007).  Can it be predicted from a student’s behaviour early on in course?  Can it be prevented?  Does less participation on forums correspond to lower levels of motivation?
