Owsley County Courthouse High electricity bills Rate increases made future bleak Challenge

Install energy-saving fluorescent lighting throughout courthouse Solution

Results & Savings Over 340 fixtures upgraded Employee comments on quality of light very positive Total electricity use down 8%

Jack’s IGA Total reconstruction required after a fire destroyed the store. Challenge

Make the new store as energy efficient as possible: 5 insulated windows Insulated block walls, roof, and rolling doors Energy-saving lighting Compressor rack system Refrigeration waste heat recovery system Solution:

Results & Savings Store uses 40% less energy Headache-free refrigeration service contract Utility billing analysis revealed further $12,000 per year savings by switching from General Service to Power Service rate class

Clear Creek Festival Sound systems, lighting, etc. dependent on expensive generators for power Cost to connect to electricity grid = $7,000 Challenge

Install 615-watt solar electric system that produces 80 kWh per month (in 2012 upgraded to 1,875 Watts) Install enough battery capacity to store 28 kWh Finance: $10,000 loan from MACED allowed purchase and installation of solar electric system & construction of support structure Solutions

Results & Savings Sufficient power for 3 day concert each year and general operations between events Saves 36 gallons of diesel for generator use each year Received federal grant of $4,500 for the project
