Define “Scientific Method” A series of steps that scientists follow to solve a problem or answer a question.

List the steps of the Scientific Method, in order: 1.Problem 2.Hypothesis 3.Materials 4.Procedure 5.Data (or Results) 6.Conclusion

Listed below are six steps in the Scientific Method. They have been written out of sequence. Your job is to find the 1 st step, then the 2 nd, then the 3 rd, and so on. ___Hypothesis ___Data (or Results) ___Problem ___Materials ___Conclusion ___Procedure

Name the step of the Scientific Method that is being described: __________ This step is the question that you wish to answer by conducting (doing) the investigation…

Name the step of the Scientific Method that is being described: __________ This is the step that lists the steps that you follow as you conduct the investigation…

Name the step of the Scientific Method that is being described: ___________ This is an educated guess. It can be written as an if/then statement…

Name the step of the Scientific Method that is being described: _____________ You must observe what happens using your five senses and then record these observations in graphs, charts, drawings, diagrams, photographs, etc.

Name the step of the Scientific Method that is being described: _________ The following list of supplies is an example of this step: 3 test tubes 50mL flask 6 250mL beakers

Name the step of the Scientific Method that is being described: ___________ This step is the final answer to the Problem. You hope that it is correct, but it may be wrong. It is written as an entire paragraph.

As you read the following story, you will realize that the scientific method is being used to find out the answer to a question about candy. See if you can ‘spot’ the steps…

Two girls were arguing about which candies are the favorites of 6 th graders. Jessica thought that the favorite candy of pre-teens was Skittles, but Marilyn believed that M&Ms were the favorite candy. The girls decided to conduct an experiment. They asked a class of 33 6 th graders to participate in an experiment. 33 packets of Skittles, 33 packets of M&Ms, and 33 packets of 4 other candies were set out on the teacher’s desk in the front of the classroom. Students were told that they could choose only one packet of candy to eat during lunch. By the end of class, 25 packets of Skittles, 5 packets of M&Ms, and 3 packets of sour balls were taken. Judging from the number of candy packets that were taken, Jessica and Marilyn realized that that 6 th graders preferred Skittles to M&Ms.

See if you can ‘spot’ the steps NOW…

Two girls wanted to know which candies are the favorites of 6 th graders. Jessica thought that the favorite candy of pre-teens was Skittles, but Marilyn believed that M&Ms were the favorite candy. The girls decided to conduct an experiment. They asked a class of 33 6 th graders to participate in an experiment. Thirty-three packets of Skittles, 33 packets of M&Ms, and 33 packets of 4 other candies were set out on the teacher’s desk in the front of the classroom. Students were told that they could choose only one packet of candy to eat during lunch. By the end of class, 25 packets of Skittles, 5 packets of M&Ms, and 3 packets of sour balls were taken. Judging from the number of candy packets that were taken, Jessica and Marilyn realized that 6th graders preferred Skittles to M&Ms. Problem Hypothesis Materials and Procedure (mixed Together) Data (Results) Conclusion

From the story, what is this step? Jessica thought that the favorite candy of pre-teens was Skittles, but Marilyn believed that M&Ms were the favorite candy.

From the story, what is this step? Thirty-three packets of Skittles, 33 packets of M&Ms, and 33 packets of four other candies were set out on the teacher’s desk in the front of the classroom, available to any student.

From the story, what is this step? 33packets of Skittles 33 packets of M&Ms 33 packets of Sourballs 33 packets of other candies 33 students in one classroom

From the story, what is this step? Which candy is the favorite of 6 th graders?

From the story, what is this step? By the end of class, 25 packets of Skittles, 5 packets of M&Ms, and 3 packets of sour balls were taken.

From the story, what is this step? 6 th Graders (in this class, at least) preferred Skittles to M&Ms.
