Virtual Classroom Tour - VCT Partners in Learning Global Forum March , 2012 New Zealand

Virtual Classroom Tour – VCT Name of Project: - DIY Digital Textbook Based on Cloud Service and MS-Onenote - How to Improve Scientific Research Abilities through ”e-Experiment & Observation Note” Educator(s) Hwang Kim School Brief description of school context Taebong Elementary School Address : # 33, Cheongye St., Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, Korea The School of Digital Textbook Research designated by Education Office (Mar.1, 2009~Feb. 28, 2011) School Website Content/Subject Areas Science Age/Grade level The 6 th grade Project Objectives 1.Students can employ “e-Experiment & Observation Note” to integrate their textbooks, learning resources, research activities, results of activities, and presentation materials into an e-portfolio. 2.Students can employ “e-Experiment & Observation Note” to improve basic and comprehensive research abilities. 3.Students can employ “e-Experiment & Observation Note” to collaborate and improve their advanced thinking.

Project Description Design of the Learning Environment ◆ Background 1.Need for e-portfolios with integrated learning resources: It is necessary for students to create their own e-portfolio in which students can combine their textbooks, notes, multimedia content, and web-based materials 2.Need for observation and research with greater freedom: As the existing ICT class adopts a keyboard-based input of the data, it may restrict students in expressing their thoughts. 3.Need for collaborative learning: Students should share and discuss the results of experiments and observation via real-time note sharing, broadening knowledge through collaborative thinking. ◆ Objectives 1.Based on the constructivism, “e-Experiment & Observation Note” enables students to organize what they learned, through a process of combining their resources, outcomes, short and long- term research results, presentation and other general materials into one e-portfolio. 2.The “e-Experiment & Observation Note” allows students to express their opinions more freely, thereby improving their integrated research abilities. 3.With the “e-Experiment & Observation Note”, students can collaborate in real time and improve scientific communication skills.

Evidence of Learning ◆ A practical case in improving scientific research abilities 1.The teacher provided the basic structure of one-note DIY textbook, in which students can integrate textbooks and workbooks to create their own content. They introduced the basic note into their own forms. 2. Developed and applied e-Note strategies to improve scientific research abilities. In particular, the electronic pen was applied to develop creative ways of expression, such as mind map, data conversion, scrapping, and inking.

Knowledge Building & Critical Thinking Extended Learning Beyond the Classroom ◆ Gathered experiment and observation results on the e-note for e-publishing, and created and shared UCC via storyboard on the e-note. ◆ The e-experiment & observation note provided a forum for e-PBL activities where students can apply what they learned into finding solutions to our daily problems and advancing thinking abilities. Create UCC Science Newspaper Come up with ideas Discover issues in our life Draw solutions

Collaboration ◆ Collaborative Learning and Usage of Cloud Services - Students can access their notes at anytime and anywhere using cloud services like SkyDrive - Students can improve their scientific communication skills through real-time collaboration, based on the sharing function of “e-Experiment & Observation Note.” ◆ Project Results 1.The adoption of “e-Experiment & Observation Note” encouraged students to have interest in experiments and practices and participate more actively in studying science through real-time collaboration. With the tools like e-inking, students were able to have more diverse options in expressing their opinions, changing their attitude toward science in a positive way. 2.After the adoption of “e-Experiment & Observation Note”, the experimental group scored in the follow-up test, 3.62 points higher than of the comparison group. With the p value of.008, the two groups showed a statistically meaningful difference at the p<.05 level. The result indicates that the e-note is effective in enhancing scientific research abilities. 3.Learning materials, courses, and results in the e-note were integrated and managed in an e-portfolio. Students were able to enjoy diverse tools for expression and extend their creative thinking, rather than focusing on keyboard-based texting. In addition, restructured textbooks and materials provided content customized to learners.
