verbs A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being. Eg: The lion attacked the deer. The ice cream tasted sweet.

Main and Helping Verbs The main verb is the word that expresses action or state of being. A helping verb helps the main verb express action or state of being. Eg: The girls were eating candies during break. Were is the helping verb, and eating is the main verb

Verb phrase A verb phrase contains at least one main verb and one or more helping verbs. e.g: The movie might release over the weekend. Might release is the verb phrase in which, might is the helping verb and release is the main verb.

Action Verbs: An action verb expresses either physical or mental activity. E.g: The children made airplanes out of paper. Made is an action verb. Samantha thought about her decision again. Thought is a mental activity.

linking verb A linking verb connects, or links, the subject to a word or word group that identifies or describes the subject. E.g.: Coffee is my favorite drink. Is, is connecting “coffee” to “my favorite drink”

Linking verbs E.g: The roses were smelling so good. What was so good? The roses. How do you know that? Because the subject (roses) is linked to its description (so good) by the linking verb (were smelling)

What Is an Adverb? An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs answer the following questions: Where? How often? How long? When? To what extent? How much? How?

Example 1 My family and I recently went to a trip. When did my family and I go to a trip? Recently. Hence recently is an adverb that is modifying the verb went, by giving us more information about the time of the trip.

Example 2 Her shirt was completely filled with blood. To what extent was the shirt filled with blood? Completely. Hence completely is the adverb because it is modifying the verb filled by giving us more information about the amount.

preposition A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence.

Examples The book fell into the water. How are book and water related in this sentence? The book falls inside the water. How do you know this? By the help of the preposition (Into) The roots of the plant grow underneath the ground. How are roots of plant and the ground related? The roots are below the ground. How do you know this? By the preposition (Underneath)

Compound Prepositions Some prepositions are made up of more than one word. These are called compound prepositions. E.g.: The climate will become warmer according to the scientists.

Coordinating Conjunctions A conjunction is a word that joins words or groups of words. Some common coordinating conjunctions are and, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet. E.g.: She went out yet she forgot to bring me cake. I like drawing and singing.

Correlative conjunctions Correlative conjunctions are pairs of conjunctions. E.g.: you could either buy a dress or shoes and get a hat free. E.g.: She neither paid attention in class nor did her homework

Interjections An interjection is a word that expresses emotion. e.g.: I stepped in mud. Yuck! Interjections that express mild emotion are set off from the rest of a sentence by commas. e.g.: Well, I will try my best.
