Statistics Sydney’s population is around 4.5 million and is the largest city in Australia. Sydney is the 24 th most expensive city in the world to live in. Tokyo #1, Osaka #2, Hong Kong #5, Singapore #10, Seoul #14, Sydney #24 *2010 statistics Expect to spend around $150 per week in other expenses

Multicultural Sydney is the most multicultural city in the world nationalities & 140 languages. In 2008, 32% of Sydney residents were born overseas. 1/3 of Sydney’s population uses a language other than English at home

Internet Internet is limited and expensive in Australia No downloading or uploading permitted For complete internet independence bring your laptop and procure a mobile broadband (wireless usb) e.g. Telstra, Optus, 3..etc

Breakfast Breakfast is self-serve “continental style” cereals, toast or pastries, condiments, fruit, tea, coffee, milk and juice Host will not provide a hot breakfast Host will show you what to use for breakfast Clean and tidy-up after breakfast Breakfast time is 6am -10am everyday

Midday meals Not provided during the week Snacks are not provided Make lunch for $10 per day Go to the supermarket and buy groceries A space to store your food provided

Interaction Hosts consider themselves “working middle class” and live busy lives. Hosts may leave early and come home late. Dinner is the best time for interaction Evening meals between 6-8pm Breakfast is not the best time to try to interact

Diet Inform the host about food dislikes or allergies Australian food is very different Come home for dinner & vital interaction Offer to help cook or cook a meal for the host.

Out for dinner? Let the host know as early as possible – Your host will keep a meal for you, to be reheated later or you can take it for lunch the next day Call before 4pm A phone call or SMS works best

Help in Homestay Everyone must help clean up – Cleaners and maids are not common and are very expensive in Australia Host will not clean your room Leave your room the same as you found it Homestay is for you, not friends Ask permission for friends to visit

Water Australia is a dry continent Showers should be no more than 5-10 minutes Save water any way you can Australian’s take this very seriously

Insects There are a lot of bugs (insects) in Australia It is normal to see insects inside the house. This is not a sign of unhygienic conditions To minimize this problem, never leave food in your bedroom
