Geography 5 LOCATION Human Environment Interaction PLACEREGION MOVEMENT

- Tells where a place is. LOCATION (There are 2 different types of Location) ABSOLUTE LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION

ABSOLUTE LOCATION - The EXACT spot on Earth where a place can be found.

Latitude and Longitude lines tell ABSOLUTE LOCATION.

A street address is also an ABSOLUTE LOCATION. Baines Middle School 9000 Sienna Ranch Road Missouri City, Texas 77459

RELATIVE LOCATION - The location of one place in relation to other places.

When someone asks you where you live, you tell them you live “Near Houston” rather than saying, “in Missouri City.” Believe it or not, most people just don’t know where we are!

PLACE -Shows something about a specific area (a landmark). -Man-made or nature-made.

Statue of Liberty When you think of the Statue of Liberty, what state do you think of?

Eiffel Tower When you think of the Eiffel Tower, what country do you think of?

Mt. Everest When you think of the Mt. Everest, where do you think of?

Mississippi River Delta When you think of the Mississippi River Delta, where do you think of?

REGION - A group of places that have physical features or human characteristics in common.

The Rocky Mountains

The American Southwest

The Arctic

MOVEMENT - The movement of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another.

Early humans chased herds of animals across continents.

Companies use shipping containers to move goods to other countries.

, sending letters, and making phone calls are all forms of movement of ideas. Writing Letters Phone Calls

Transportation Corridor A path that makes movement easier.

Transportation Barrier Something that gets in the way of movement and makes it more difficult

HEI - Human-Environment Interaction occurs because humans depend on, adapt to, and modify the world around them.

DEPEND ON ADAPT TO MODIFY (CHANGE) air to breathe sunlight for energy, and to help plants grow rain waters plants and gives us life plants for food trees = wood for building flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, forest fires, earth quakes if it is cold we put on a sweater if it is too warm, we wear shorts farming litter and pollute cut down forests for houses plant trees and flowers recycle clean up beaches

In the case of hurricanes, fires, tornadoes, and flooding, humans have to adapt to the changes in their environment.

Humans clear land for new homes and neighborhoods.

Farming is another example of how humans modify the world around them.

LOCATION - tells where a place is (There are 2 different types of Location) (1) ABSOLUTE LOCATION - the EXACT spot on Earth where a place can be found (2) RELATIVE LOCATION - the location of one place in relation to other places ABSOLUTE LOCATIONRELATIVE LOCATIONExamples: Latitude and Longitude lines a street address Mrs. Sekula’s class is next door to Mr. Yirgu’s class MOVEMENT - the movement of people, goods, and ideas from one place to another In 1976, my family moved from Indiana to Texas. When we arrived at our new home, we called our family and told them we had arrived safely. MOVEMENT of PEOPLE MOVEMENT of GOODS MOVEMENT of IDEAS We rented a moving van to haul all our stuff across the country.
