The Pizza Eating Contest INTRODUCTION TO MIXED NUMBERS AND IMPROPER FRACTIONS

Who’s The Winner? There were 10 identical medium pizzas cut into 8 slices on a table. Jon and Scott had 5 minutes to see who could eat the most pizza. At the end, they had an argument – they each said they were the winner. Scott ate 12 pieces of pizza. Jon ate 1 ½ pizzas. Who was correct?

They were both correct! Count up the slices – 12 slices would equal 1 ½ pizzas. When we want to talk about individual pieces we use improper fraction form 12/8 What do you think the 8 represents? When we want to talk about whole items and any leftover pieces, we use mixed numbers: 1 ½

Let’s Practice A) 2 ¾ or 11/4 B) 2 6/8 or 22/8 C) 3 ¼ or 13/4 D) 1 4/8 or 12/8 E) 4/5
