LO7 Understand how to keep children safe in an early years setting [AC 7.1] Time: 15 mins How observant are you when the setting is busy? Consider: Can you prevent an accident before it happens? Can you spot a hazard? Do you always deal with risks and hazards immediately? Can you effectively pass on information regarding any health and safety issues? Do you tend to focus on what is going on immediately in front of you or do you have ‘360’ vision? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

Maintaining a healthy and safe environment LO7 Understand how to keep children safe in an early years setting [AC 7.1] Maintaining a healthy and safe environment Everyone at the setting has a role to play in relation to health and safety policies and procedures. All practitioners need to be aware of all policies and procedures within the setting. There will be designated people for specific roles such as first aid, safeguarding and fire drills. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

All practitioners need to maintain safe working practices. All practitioners need to respond to any incidents or accidents. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

Maintaining a healthy and safe environment LO7 Understand how to keep children safe in an early years setting [AC 7.1] Maintaining a healthy and safe environment Risk assessments will be carried out on a regular basis, according to the policies of the setting. Practitioners will be continually risk assessing the area they are in so as to ensure the children are safe at all times. Section 3 of the 2012 EYFS lays out the safeguarding and welfare requirements for all settings. 3.2 of section 3 states; Providers must take all necessary steps to keep children safe and well. 3.44 of section 3 states; The provider must promote the good health of children attending the setting. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

What to do in a fire drill LO7 Understand how to keep children safe in an early years setting [AC 7.1] Time: 15 mins Why is it important to know your own roles and responsibilities in relation to health and safety? Consider: What to do in a fire drill What to do if a child has a bump to the head What to do if a stranger tries to gain entry to the setting Your role as a student. Safeguarding and welfare requirements LO7 Understand how to keep children safe in an early years setting [AC 7.2] Safeguarding and welfare requirements As previously stated the revised EYFS is divided in to sections and Section 3 is dedicated to the safeguarding and welfare requirements. This section has sub-headings including: Child protection Suitable people Staff qualifications, training, support and skills Key person Staff:child ratios Accident or injury Safety. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

LO7 Understand how to keep children safe in an early years setting [AC 7.2] Time: 15 mins You will be given two of the areas of the safeguarding and welfare requirements of the EYFS which were identified on the previous slide. For each area consider: An explanation of the area How this supports the safeguarding and welfare of all children Examples of this in your setting. You will feedback your findings in the Classroom discussion activity. Teacher notes: Ensure that all areas are covered. The role of the practitioner in relation to infection control LO7 Understand how to keep children safe in an early years setting [AC 7.3] The role of the practitioner in relation to infection control There are a number of ways that infections can be passed from one person to another. It is important for the practitioner to minimise any spread of infection. Hand washing – It is important to wash hands before preparing food, after a visit to the toilet, after any messy activity. The practitioner needs to learn the correct technique for hand washing. Food hygiene – A practitioner should take a course in food hygiene if they are preparing food, to ensure that they are safe with food. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

The role of the practitioner in relation to infection control LO7 Understand how to keep children safe in an early years setting [AC 7.3] The role of the practitioner in relation to infection control Dealing with spillages – Practitioners should be aware of the setting’s policies and procedures and clean all spillages up immediately. Safe disposal of waste – Ensure that you know the procedures for disposing of bodily waste in your setting. It is important that you dispose of it correctly in order to avoid any contamination – don’t forget to wash your hands after you have done this. Correct personal protective equipment – Be aware of what protective equipment is available for you to use. You may need to use gloves when dealing with blood or changing nappies. You will need to use an apron when preparing food. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

Consider: Hand-washing Food hygiene Dealing with spillages safely Safe disposal of waste Using correct personal protective equipment. What would be the consequences of not following measures to prevent the spread of infection? Review your own placement with regard to: Keeping children safe Maintaining a healthy environment Safeguarding and welfare Infection control.
